About Our Destination
Being Gay in Portugal
LGBTQ+ rights in Portugal have improved substantially in the 2000s and 2010s and are now among the best in the world. Portugal has wide-ranging anti-discrimination laws and is one of the few countries in the world to contain a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation. On June 5, 2010, the state became the eighth in the world to recognize same-sex marriage. On March 1, 2011, the President ratified the Law of Gender Identity, said to be one of the most advanced in the world, which simplifies the process of sex and name change for transgender people. Same-sex adoption has been legal since March 1, 2016.The country, while still influenced by Roman Catholicism, has progressively become more accepting of same-sex relationships. Opinion polls suggest that over 60% of the Portuguese population supports same-sex marriage and that around 70% believes that LGBT people should enjoy equal rights. Lisbon and Porto have visible LGBTQ+ scenes, with several gay bars, nightclubs and other venues, as well as their annual pride parades.
Climate
In March, daytime temperatures typically range between a high of 65°F (18°C) and low of 48°F (8°C) degrees, with nighttime temps falling into the high 40’s F. And with the weather changing in the past few years, Portugal has been seeing higher than normal temperatures lately. It is always best to dress in layers and bring a rain jacket and small umbrella just in case.
Currency
The monetary unit of Portugal is the Euro. You can find the most current conversion rate at websites such as http://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/
Major credit cards are accepted throughout the country. We recommend calling your bank before you leave to advise them of your travels.
Languages
Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, but many people speak English!

Travel and arrival
Air Travel
Airports
You will need to fly in and out of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, Portugal—unless you are also planning to join us on our 1-, 2-, or 3-night Pre-Cruise Vacation Stretcher in Lisbon; in that case, you will need to fly into Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) in Lisbon, Portugal and out of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, Portugal.
Flight Arrival and Departure Times
All flights should arrive into Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, Portugal by 3 pm on April 2, 2022 to get to the ship in time for our orientation and evening plans, which begin at 5 pm. All guests should be on board by 5 pm. The airport is approximately 20 minutes from the ship’s docking location. If you plan to join us on our 1-, 2-, or 3-night Pre-Cruise Vacation Stretcher, you may fly into Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) in Lisbon at any time on the first day of your 1-, 2-, or 3-night Vacation Stretcher (hotel check-in is at 3 pm). All flights can depart Porto (OPO) at any time on April 9, 2022, because the ship will overnight in Porto on April 8. Transfer to the airport is on your own, but the ship will assist in making taxi reservations. No Post-Cruise Vacation Stretchers are offered for Porto.
Luggage Allowances
While there is no luggage limit on the cruise itself, airlines often restrict (or charge) for excess baggage. Because each airline is different, and the regulations change over time, please check with your airline for baggage allowances.

Ship Check-In
You are welcome to come to the ship at any time on April 2 and relax in the lounge. The ship will store your luggage and you can explore Porto. The staterooms will not be ready until 4 pm.

Electricity
The cabins have both a 110-volt outlet (standard US style, by the vanity) and a 220-volt outlet (standard European style). USB plugs are available by the nightstand.
Elevator
There is one elevator on this ship. It does not go up to the sun deck.
Entertainment and Programming
We will bring two Olivia entertainers to perform on several evenings, as well as enjoy some of the local entertainment along the way.
River cruising is about port destinations. Don’t expect the same type of schedule packed with shipboard activities you might find on a big ship! On a typical day, after breakfast we will enjoy a walking tour of our new port city, followed by lunch on board and then another walking (or other) tour or free time to explore. Perhaps you’ll enjoy a fun and informative lecture on the history of the area or take that well-deserved nap. It’s your vacation! In the evenings, we will be delighted by local entertainment or one of our two Olivia entertainers. After the shows, enjoy our riverboat version of “Club O,” with our talented staff taking turns being a “guest DJ” to provide dancing music in the main lounge. Or you may choose to get to bed early for your next full day!
Excursions
A walking and/or city tour is included in each of the ports visited. There is no need to sign up for these in advance.
Gratuities
Gratuities for ship staff are included in the cost of your trip. Gratuities go to the cruise manager, cabin steward/stewardess, dining room staff, and other behind-the-scenes crew members.
Tipping for the local guides and bus drivers on included tours is not included. Standard tipping for a ½ day tour is 2-3 euros for the guide, and 1-2 euros for the bus driver.
Internet
Complimentary wifi is included on board in public spaces and in your cabins for use on your personal digital devices (phone, laptop, or tablet computer). There is an onboard internet center with two desktop computers for guest use. Faxes can be sent from the reception desk for a charge.
Laundry Services
Laundry and pressing service is available; prices will be available onboard the ship. Dry-cleaning or self-service laundry facilities are not available on board. Check on board for pricing.
Medical Services
The ship is minutes away from hospitals when we are docked, and close to local towns when we cruise along the river. The ship does not have an onboard doctor.

The currency used on board is Euros (€). All purchases made on the ship will be charged to your onboard account, which you create when you first check in. Cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted. Please check with the front office on the ship for further details.

Telephone
Each cabin has a phone to call cabin-to-cabin and international/local calls. There is an additional fee to use this phone for international or local calls; cost is available on board.
Valuables
Each room has a safe where you may store your passport, credit cards, cash, etc. However, we recommend you leave jewelry and other valuables at home.
After Your Trip
Transfers to the Airport
The ship can assist in ordering your transportation to the Porto airport, or wherever your final travel plans may take you.

This trip requires some mobility without the use of a wheelchair or scooter, as most of the tours are walking tours for up to 3 hours, which may include walking on cobblestone streets and stairs. A ‘Gentle Walkers’ group is offered on most included walking tours, which accommodates those needing a little extra time and sometimes offers a shortened version of a tour, designed to encounter as few stairs as possible.

If you are bringing a portable wheelchair or collapsible travel scooter, you must be able to collapse it and store it in your cabin. It cannot be used to get around the ship, only while off the ship on tours that are wheelchair/scooter accessible. On tours, the usefulness of a portable wheelchair or scooter may be limited because we will be navigating cobblestone streets with hard curbs (no curb cutouts) and stairs.

If you have limited mobility, you are required to travel with someone who can assist you.
