About Our Destination

Activity level
These trips require a moderate level of mobility, as most of the tours are walking tours (walking on cobblestone streets and some stairs). There is a lot of walking on these trips, and we highly recommend that you start walking daily now to ensure that by the time we depart you are comfortable walking 10,000 to 15,000 steps (approximately 5-7.5 miles [8-12 kilometers]) a day and thereby may fully enjoy all that this trip has to offer!
If you are bringing a portable wheelchair or scooter, you must be able collapse it and store it in your cabin. They cannot be driven to your cabins or other parts of the ship due to the limited space. They may only be used on tours, and their usefulness on these tours may be limited because of encountering cobblestone streets and stairwells and the need to lift the chair or scooter onto and off of curbs.
If you have limited mobility, you are required to travel with someone who can assist you.
Being Gay in Portugal
LGBTQ+ rights in Portugal have improved substantially in the 2000s and 2010s and are now among the best in the world. Portugal has wide-ranging anti-discrimination laws and is one of the few countries in the world to contain a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation. On 5 June 2010, the state became the eighth in the world to recognize same-sex marriage. On 1 March 2011, the President ratified the Law of Gender Identity, said to be one of the most advanced in the world, which simplifies the process of sex and name change for transgender people. Same-sex adoption has been legal since 1 March 2016.
The country, while still influenced by Roman Catholicism, has progressively become more accepting of same-sex relationships. Opinion polls suggest that over 60% of the Portuguese population supports same-sex marriage and that around 70% believes that LGBT people should enjoy equal rights. Lisbon and Porto have visible LGBTQ+ scenes, with several gay bars, nightclubs and other venues, as well as their annual pride parades.
Climate
The climate in Portugal will vary depending on our location in the country. It varies between a high of 65°F (18°C) and low of 48°F (8°C) degrees. However, with the weather changing, they have been seeing higher than normal temperatures in the past few years.
Currency
The monetary unit of Portugal is the euro. You can find the most current conversion rate at websites such as http://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/
Major credit cards are accepted throughout the country. We recommend calling your bank before you leave to advise them of your travels.
Languages
Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, but many people speak English!

If you are not a US or Canadian citizen, please check with both your country’s consulate and the consulates or embassies of Portugal and Spain nearest you for visa requirements to enter Portugal and Spain. You will also need a passport that is valid for six months past the first date of the trip and has at least two blank pages.
Travel Insurance
If you have not done so already, Olivia recommends that you purchase a travel protection plan to protect yourself and your trip investment from the unexpected. Now more than ever it’s extremely important to think about the unexpected. It is important to purchase the travel protection within 21 days of your initial invoice date in order to receive the most comprehensive coverage, but it isn’t too late. Consider travel protection for trip cancellation, delay, and interruption; baggage delay; emergency medical services and emergency evacuation; and more.
For a travel insurance quote, more information, or to purchase a protection plan, please call Olivia at 1-800-631-6277 (within the US) or 1-415-962-5700 (outside the US) and select option 1 to speak with an Olivia Travel Consultant.

You may also check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at www.cdc.gov. Just click on “Traveler’s Health” and then “Vaccinations.”

Travel and arrival

Air Travel
Airports
You will need to fly in and out of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, Portugal—unless you are also planning to join us on our 1- or 3-night pre-trip Vacation Stretcher in Lisbon; in that case, you will need to fly into Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) in Lisbon, Portugal and out of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, Portugal.
Discounts
We are proud to partner with Delta Airlines. Approximately 11 months prior to the trip, check our airline discounts page for the latest discounts available.
Flight arrival and departure times
All flights should arrive into Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, Portugal by 3 pm on March 27, 2021 to get to the ship in time for our orientation and evening plans, which begin at 5 pm. All guests should be on board by 5 pm. The airport is approximately 20 minutes from the ship’s docking location.
If you plan to join us on our 1- or 3-night pre-trip Vacation Stretcher, you may fly into Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) in Lisbon at any time on the first day of your 1- or 3- day Vacation Stretcher (hotel check-in is at 3 pm).
All flights can depart Porto (OPO) at any time on April 3, 2021, because the ship will overnight in Porto on April 2. Transfer to the airport is on your own, but the ship will assist in making taxi reservations. No vacation stretchers are offered for Porto.
Luggage allowances
While there is no luggage limit on the cruise itself, airlines often restrict (or charge) for excess baggage. Because each airline is different, and the regulations change over time, please check with your airline for baggage allowances.

Entertainment and Programming
We will bring two Olivia entertainers to perform on several evenings, as well as enjoy some of the local entertainment along the way.
River cruising is about port destinations. Don’t expect the same type of schedule packed with shipboard activities you might find on a big ship! On a typical day, after breakfast we will enjoy a walking tour of our new port city, followed by lunch on board and then another walking (or other) tour or free time to explore. Perhaps you’ll enjoy a fun and informative lecture on the history of the area or take that well-deserved nap. It’s your vacation! In the evenings, we will be delighted by local entertainment or one of our two Olivia entertainers. After the shows, enjoy our riverboat version of “Club O,” with our talented staff taking turns being a “guest DJ” to provide dancing music in the main lounge. Or you may choose to get to bed early for your next full day!
Excursions
A walking and/or city tour is included in each of the ports visited. There is no need to sign up for these in advance.
Gentle Walker
Whenever possible, we will create a Gentle Walkers group on each included tour as for any guests who need a little extra time walking—perhaps guests with scooters or canes or photographers who like to stop frequently to take photos. For those with mobility issues, we suggest purchasing a cane that can also fold out to be a seat so you can rest while the group stops to listen to the guide. There are many different styles to choose from online on sites such as amazon.com.
Gratuities
Gratuities for ship staff are included in the cost of your trip. Gratuities go to the cruise manager, cabin steward/stewardess, dining room staff, and other behind-the-scenes crew members.
Tipping for the local guides and bus drivers on included tours is not included. Standard tipping for a ½ day tour is 2-3 euros for the guide, and 1-2 euros for the bus driver.
Internet, Email, and Fax
Complimentary Wi-Fi is included on board in public spaces and in your cabins for use on your personal digital devices (phone, laptop, or tablet computer). There is an onboard internet center with two desktop computers for guest use. Faxes can be sent from the reception desk for a charge.

Laundry and pressing service is available; prices will be available onboard the ship. Dry-cleaning or self-service laundry facilities are not available on board. Check on board for pricing.
