Kajsa Alger

Kajsa Alger is the Executive Chef and Susan Feniger’s Partner of Mud Hen Tavern, a neighborhood bar and restaurant that opened on December 7, 2013. Located near the corner of Highland and Melrose in Hollywood, she and Susan prepare a wide variety of rustic dishes and bar food, with the occasional global inflections that they naturally bring to the table. Coupled with a vibrant beverage program that offers a fun and curated selection of international wines, local craft beers and artisanal cocktails, Mud Hen Tavern is a welcome addition to Los Angeles’ dining and bar scene.

Prior to that, she held the same position at STREET, which opened in 2009 and was known for its wide array of street food from around the world. While the brick and mortar location closed in October 2013, STREET will live on in lots of exciting ways, including new locations and a robust catering business.

With more than 20 years of culinary experience and frequent travel exploring ethnic marketplaces, Kajsa has developed an incredibly vast knowledge for spices and globally-influenced cuisine. These trademarks of her cooking naturally shine through in Mud Hen Tavern’s menu, with simple, rustic dishes diners crave. Coupled with a vibrant beverage program that offers a fun and curated selection of wines, craft beers and artisanal cocktails, Mud Hen Tavern is a welcome addition to Los Angeles’ dining and bar scene.

As a teenager in Los Angeles, Kajsa snuck into the kitchen of CITY restaurant and ended up in an informal apprenticeship with Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken that would turn into a lifelong friendship and eventual partnership. She ultimately joined the team at Border Grill in their flagship Santa Monica location in 1990, where she could showcase her talents in a collection of menus that highlighted foods from around Mexico and the Latin world.

Kajsa next began working with Judy Rogers at the legendary Zuni Café in San Francisco to further hone her culinary skills. She then joined David Kinch’s highly-acclaimed Restaurant Sent Sovi, and the northwest favorite, Carlyle Restaurant & Bar in Portland, Oregon. In 2003, she returned to Los Angeles and the Border Grill/Ciudad company to head up kitchen operations as Corporate Chef for their five restaurants.

Kajsa’s long association with Susan, her understanding of operational and financial systems and her creative passion for simple, colloquial foods have made for a fun and fruitful partnership that allows for both to continue exploring and sharing their culinary passions.

Michele Balan

Michele Balan is a classy woman with attitude. Sometimes the class has to move over for the attitude. She was a finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, and titleholder of "Last Woman Comic Standing." Michele was voted one of the “Top 10 Comics” by Backstage Magazine. The San Francisco Bay Times also placed her on their national Top 10 and Broadway World honored Michele at number two in their Top 10 List of cabaret performers.

Michele headlines around the country at top comedy clubs, festivals such as Montreal’s “Just for Laughs,” corporate events, JCCs, country clubs, on cruises, and more! She is appropriate for all audiences...well, maybe not children's parties! She is a recurring performer on The Joy Behar Show, and has numerous appearances on HBO, Showtime, Comedy Central, Byron Allen's Comics Unleashed, and E!. Along with her stand-up, Michele writes for many well-known comedians and is a contributor to a variety of magazines.

Gina Breedlove

"In Goddess culture, Gina Breedlove is a vocal priestess, leaving her audience the privileged recipients of her pure spirit and deep vocal well." ~ Holly Near

The creative force of Gina Breedlove is as dangerous and delightful as this earth we share. Folksoul is the signature sound of this versatile vocalist and songwriter, who defies and redefines genre. A coalescence of rhythm and blues, with cadences of folk, it is indeed the medicine that many of us have been waiting for.

Wayne Dyer

Internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development, Dr. Dyer is the author of over 30 books, has created many audio programs and videos, and has appeared on thousands of television and radio shows.

His books Manifest Your Destiny, Wisdom of the Ages, There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, and The New York Times bestsellers 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace, The Power of Intention, Inspiration, Change Your Thoughts—Change Your Life, Excuses Begone, Wishes Fulfilled and no I Can See Clearly Now - have all been featured as National Public Television specials.

An adherent of the philosophy that thoughts shape reality, Wayne offers a step-by-step program for making one’s thoughts intentional so that one can create the reality you want. And for those so bold, he shows how to approach life spiritually--rather than through ego—so that one can move from the sense of self as inferior to a sense of self as divine and from the need to achieve and acquire to the awareness that detachment and letting go bring freedom.

Ferron, a Canadian folk singer-songwriter and poet, and one of Canada's most respected folk musicians, is also one of the most influential writers and early performers of women's music. In listening to Ferron's music, audiences are allowed to acknowledge the passage of time, people, memories, and hopes through her poetic metaphors. Her familiar vernacular, direct statements, enlightened associations, warm and husky voice, and engaging stage presence have permitted identification with her experiences and her process, her struggles and her wisdom, her universal anguish and strength. Born on June 1, 1952, Ferron grew up in a semi-rural suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia, the eldest of seven children in a working-class family. After leaving home at 15, she scrambled financially, supporting herself by driving a cab, waitressing, shoveling gravel, and packing five-pound bags of coffee in a factory.

From her basement, she recorded and distributed Ferron (1977) and Ferron Backed Up (1978). Since both albums are now out of print collector's items, Ferron decided to re-release much of their material on subsequent albums. In 1978, Ferron was "discovered" by Gayle Scott, who became her manager and business partner. Ferron and Scott collaborated on her next two studio albums: Testimony (Lucy Records, 1980) and Shadows on a Dime (Lucy Records, 1984), which received a four-star rating from Rolling Stone magazine. She went on to release six more albums (Phantom Center, Resting with the Question, Driver, Not a Still Life, Still Riot and Impressionistic) before Turning into Beautiful, her next album of original material, in 2005 on her own label. That was followed by Girl on a Road Documentary and Live Show, then Boulder, a collection of re-recordings produced by Bitch on Short Story Records, in 2008. Boulder includes guest appearances by Ani Difranco, Indigo Girls, JD Samson (Le Tigre), Sam Parton (Be Good Tanyas), Tina G (God-des) and Julie Wolf. The newest Ferron CD, Lighten-ing, was released in 2013, also produced by Bitch, with the film Thunder (by Bitch and Billie Jo Cavallaro) packaged as a two-disc set.

Ferron also teaches master classes in writing and has opened an artist retreat for women in Three Rivers, Michigan, called "The Fen Peace and Poetry Camp for Women." For Ferron, "artistic expression is not only essential, it’s revolutionary." "Art is really the expression of the soul," Ferron says. "I'm asking women to remember that if we remember our soul, we keep our soul, and we can do it through artistic connections. Art is connected to the soul, and the soul is connected to God, and God is connected to humility, so if you want to take control of a person's soul, don't let them have art. To me it's a revolutionary act to continue keeping your artist soul alive.”

Dana Goldberg

Raised by a wild pack of Jews, otherwise known as her mother and siblings, Dana Goldberg is a force of nature on stage. From Last Comic Standing at the Tempe Improv to the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, Dana is spreading her quick wit and playful stage presence across the world. Hailed as one of the new "Queer Queens of Qomedy" CURVE Magazine raves, "She's smart, cute, and seriously funny." Girl4Girl in Seattle calls Dana our "triple threat."

She has worked with several national organizations including the Ms. Foundation in NYC, We're Funny That Way Foundation in Toronto, Canada, and Bas Bleu in Phoenix, AZ.

Dana Goldberg is a crowd favorite where ever she steps onto a stage. Sweet Baby J'ai

Few entertainers can command a stage like the indefatigable, Sweet Baby J'ai. She is a critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, producer, arranger and actress who has toured the world with her distinctive sound. Although J'ai is known for her energetic stage presence and powerful vocals, some critics describe her as a "jazz singer", a "soul singer", others as a "blues singer" but all agree that this versatile singer-songwriter is a "storyteller". She can't be contained by one genre of music.  Talented both as a vocalist and musician, she takes unconventional instruments, the washboard and spoons, and claims them as her own special sound. As one critic pointed out, "This ain't no backyard hoe down ... she will have you swooning before the concert is over."

When your mom gives you such a memorable name as "Sweet Baby," odds are you’re gonna end up in the entertainment industry.  Sweet Baby J’ai continued the family business after sneaking into Kansas City jazz clubs as a kid. With an uncle who worked as a bassist for Billie Holiday and a cousin who played guitar with Dizzy Gillespie, J’ai was constantly surrounded by the music that would become her career.  She has been featured many times on Olivia Cruises, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Playboy Jazz Fest, Casablanca Music Fest, Tokyo, Jarkata and a host of festivals, concert and club venues throughout the world.  She has shared the stage with Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample, Jill Scott, Etta James, Melissa Etheridge and many more; her velvety vocals gracing jazz, soul, and R&B songs. You can check out a dose of her latest cd, Introducing J'ai Michel on this trip designed to soothe your savage beast or feed it!

Here's a sampling of what critics are saying:
"Her voice is part cream, party honey and all soul." -New York Times
"Sweet Baby J'ai will no doubt be considered a legend in her own time ... She is by any critic's opinion, the real deal!"  - LN Magazine
"She proved it on all of us in the 1920's lesbian love story, Prove It On Me ... a flawless performance and spine tingling soulful vocalist ..." - Tolucan Times
"Show-stopper ... a sensational performer" - Durango Herald
"Extraordinary ... a stunning performer." - Jazz Now

DJ Christie James

“Music is the answer to your problems. Keep on moving then you can solve them. If you feel that you can't take no more and your feet are heading for the door, then keep on dancing and prancing.” – Danny Tenaglia

Growing up in the Bay Area DJ Christie James knew from a young age that those words were true. It wasn't until her first duty station in the Navy did she realize just how much music moved her. Stationed on the east coast she yearned for the same Bay Area club music scene that she was missing from home so she decided to create it on her own. Armed with two turntables, a fierce will, and the love of all music she honed her skills in the Navy barracks – where she became a member of the Presidential Honor Guard during the day and a struggling DJ at night. The late nights and practice paid off. Christie has not only established herself as a versatile club DJ but as a successful radio personality. Christie can be heard mornings in the San Francisco Bay Area as co-host of the Renel and Christie In The Morning Show, in the Central Valley on MEGA 100.1 "Christie In The Morning" and on Clear Channel's I Heart Radio / HD Pride Radio Station from 10p-2a EST. Christie has rocked the crowds from East Coast to West Coast and overseas in Sardinia, Italy. Whether she is spinning the hottest club cuts and old school grooves or entertaining the masses over the air, Christie is guaranteed to get the party started with any crowd, any venue, anywhere! It's time to dance!

She has 4 solo recordings, is one-half of hilarious sketch-comedy duo, Dos Fallopia ("My Breasts Are Out of Control"), and is an alumnus of cult quartet Venus Envy ("I'll Be A Homo for Xmas"). She has shared the stage with a diverse group of artists, including Steve Martin, Dave Brubeck, Janis Ian, The Indigo Girls, Heart, Kate Clinton, and Suzanne Westenhoefer.

She has been a featured act at the National and Michigan Women's Music Festivals, Bumbershoot, and the Vancouver Comedy Festival. Lisa has co-written such warped shows as "The Carpeters: Uncomfortably Close To You," “Two’s Company, I’m a Crowd,” "Deja Poo," and “Ham for the Holidays: Lard Potion No. 9.” She also finds time to work as an actor, appearing "The Vagina Monologues,” "Dirty Blonde,” and as the Wicked Witch of the West in “The Wizard of Oz” (5th Ave Theatre, Seattle). She performs regularly on Olivia Cruises, has been seen on LOGO, and is the recipient of a Just Plain Folks Award. She has composed an Off-Broadway musical about Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas (“27, Rue de Fleurus”), had one of her songs sampled by Jay-Z, and she and her music appear in recent documentary, “Two in a Million”. Koch’s CD, “Tall Cool Drink” contains the viral hit, “I’m a Middle-Aged Woman.”

Vicci Martinez

Vicci Martinez isn't worried about the rules.

The singer-songwriter continually goes against the grain both musically and lyrically. She doesn't adhere to guidelines of what pop music is supposed to be or how it should be presented. Given her penchant for writing honest, heartfelt songs, she doesn't have to either. When she hits the studio or the stage, she nods to soulful folk and classic rock with an immortal R&B groove beneath everything. On her forthcoming debut album for Universal Republic Records, VICCI, the world will get to see Vicci for who she is, and it might just be a better place because of it.

After spending high school honing her talents, she began releasing music independently in 2003. Touring the country for almost a decade, she released seven independent albums culminating with 2011's Live from Jazzbones. Along the way, she shared stages with everyone from Sting and Annie Lennox to The Supersuckers and Jonny Lang. However, NBC's television show The Voice came calling in early 2011, and that opened doors for the next phase of her career.

She landed in the show's top four after riveting and roaring performances of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" and an explosive duet with coach Cee Lo Green of Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield". However, it was her stunning live performances of “Jolene” and “Dog Days Are Over” as well as the original song that was written for her, “Afraid To Sleep,” where she shined the brightest. Vicci's robust delivery of these tune's made the tracks instant hits online.. She also began to resonate with listeners everywhere as a group of young female fans banded together to assemble the Vicci Martinez Army in honor of her.

There's a deeper message to her writing. "I'm writing about really honest subjects," she continues. “I did The Voice so I could trigger that fire in people to pursue their dreams."

Ultimately, that honesty hits the hardest, even if it breaks a couple rules in the process. "I hope people realize they can heal themselves and their hearts," concludes Vicci.

Beverly McClellan

Rock ‘n’ roll is built on a foundation of great vocalists, and Beverly McClellan is quickly becoming its newest cornerstone. NBC-TV’s The Voice introduced her to the world as a singer of stunning power and range with the presence and ability to draw comparisons to Etta James, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt and Melissa Etheridge, to name just a few of the great torchbearers whose legacies she evokes. Now McClellan’s debut international release Fear Nothing presents her as a true and original artist — a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and dynamic presence with the ability, authority and desire to carve her own place in music history.

McClellan’s anthemically rocking “I Can't Hide Me” is a bold declaration of purpose. Its rollicking roadhouse feel buoys a sweetly snarling vocal performance — dappled with her rich vibrato and skyrocketing notes that fly to the heights of her astonishing register — that celebrates her “what you see is what you get” attitude. And with McClellan, there’s plenty to see. For the past 15 years, from the day she left her job as a dentist’s assistant for a lunch break and never returned, she’s kept her head shaven and added a series of tattoos that help tell her life story. Her orca and bear body art speak of her part-Native American heritage. McClellan’s colorful peacock-and microphone sleeve was acquired during her time on The Voice, where she was a wildly popular “Final 4” contestant earlier this year.

She was born in East Tennessee and raised in Virginia’s hilly south. Today, McClellan plays more than 10 instruments, including guitar, trumpet, French horn and a host of other fretted and percussive devices. She shares, "It was kind of inevitable that I’d be a musician. I started writing my own songs when I was 13, but it just took me a while to make up my mind and really go for it."

After recording four solo albums on her own, McClellan received an email from a friend goading her to submit a video performance for a show that NBC was adding to its roster. “He wrote me that he knew I was not into the corporate scene at all, but he dared me so I had to send them a YouTube link,” she recounts, “and in an hour they got back to me and asked me to audition.” Within weeks she was making her national television debut, and both Christina Aguilera and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine wanted McClellan for their teams. McClellan chose Aguilera, and the rest — including a duet with Aguilera on the superstar’s hit “Beautiful” and five other singles — is history.

Now McClellan is ready to write a new chapter all on her own with Fear Nothing. “I’m just flying by the seat of my soul like I always do,” McClellan says. “I’m so ready to go out on the road and bring these songs to the world in a way I’ve never been able to before. It’s like the title says — I want the people who hear my music to fear nothing, and to feel the love, get inspired, and spread it around.”

Like Adele meets Diana Krall meets Bette Midler.

Sassy. Smooth. Intoxicating.

Pop/Jazz/Blues artist Suede plays piano, trumpet and guitar but voice is her first instrument and entertaining is clearly her first love. She is a consummate entertainer and song stylist among the likes of Michael Buble and co., with a little Chris Botti tossed in too. One part Rat Pack and one part Rosie Clooney. Think classic pop/jazz. Think steamy blues with a sizzling trumpet. Think love songs that’ll make you swoon. Think funny. Think wow, what pipes!

To celebrate her 25th anniversary as an independent artist on her own label, Easily Suede Music, Suede realized a lifelong dream of recording with her own big band. "Dangerous Mood" was recorded in the prestigious (Tony) Bennett Studios and released to rave reviews far and wide. Her recording of Roxanna Ward’s "Remember Who You Are" is on HRC's compilation CD "Being Out Rocks" and was featured on "The Young and The Restless." Her recording of "Emily Remembers," also from her CD "On the Day We Met," was named number one song of the year on WJZW radio in Washington, DC and has garnered national radio airplay as well as two OutMusic awards. Suede is heard regularly on NPR radio as well. Her DVD "Suede, Live at Scullers Jazz Club" is currently aired on PBS stations nationwide.

Always touring nationally and internationally with some iteration of her New York based bands, from trio all the way up to her 12 piece 'Dangerous Big Band' she plays all the best rooms, from The Kennedy Center to LA's Ford Amphitheatre; San Francisco's Rrazz Room to New York's Town Hall; Scottsdale's Center for the Arts to Cincinnati's Aronoff Center; Denver's Mercury Cafe to St. Louis' Sheldon Hall and beyond. She is proud to be an Olivia artist veteran and has likely played well over 75 trips at the time of this writing.

"Wicked exciting."

- Boston Globe

"A great voice, even better enthusiasm, and an almost giddy delight at entertaining audiences that if bottled would make every anti-depressant on the market obsolete."

- Steppin' Out Arts, NYC

"A spectacular evening of song and style."

- New York Times

"Thank you for the most incredible night of my life!"

- Bea Arthur, from Suede’s audience
