Re: helpful airfare hints

Hi to all. My wife, Char, and I are flying into Rome on July 16, taking the train directly to Sorrento where we will camp out for three days. Will do Pompeii and maybe head down the Amalfi coast. Then staying in Barcelona until July 31 on the other end.

We booked out of San Francisco on United using frequent flyer miles. Going SF to Frankfurt to Rome, then Barcelona to Frankfurt to Rome. The least expensive tickets I found were about $1,550 from the west coast, so we decided to finally use our United miles.

If anyone is planning on visiting Pompeii I am trying to arrange for a private guide/tour. The summer crowds are suppose to be brutal there and having a private guide will help with getting through the lines, etc. I would love to find another couple or two to share the guide!

We also love train travel. We have used Amtak a lot when in the States before and after Olivia trips. We traveled from Orlando to New York after the 2010 Sun Cruise, lots of Olivia gals on the train, made the Olivia experience last longer! Before the Alaska Cruise we got the train from San Fran  to Seattle and then onto Vancover. After the cruise we got the train to LA with a stop over in Portland , a visit to some great  friends we had met on the Sun Cruise. Train is so much more fun and relaxing  than flying  and you get to see so much more if you have the time.

From my reseach the  fast trains in Italy seem fairly easy to book on line.  Will do some more exploring before we make any definate plans , still finalizing our travel plans for the Feb Leadership Cruise ! Flights to Florida booked but still organizing our trip to the Everglades after the cruise.

Any one else going on the Leadership Cruise in Feb, great to meet up on the ship and get to know each other before our Europe Adventure, Jayne

That is so true.  I am loving it.  We have to come straight back from Barcelona because Maggie is a school Principal and has to get back for school.  So all of our options will need to be at the front of the trip. This is going to be great!.  I am not getting direct flights to either Rome or Venice fro L.A. either.  Am kind of realizing we will be spending a lot of time traveling to our travel destinations.

I love train travel.  A couple of years ago,we took the train up the West coast fro L.A. to Seattle, then from Seattle to Chicago.  Had a sleeper and it was so relaxing, and the scenery was fantastic.  But we flew home because of time restraints.  Looking forward to seeing Italy by train.  At one point I was thinking of renting a car, but you really do not get to appreciate the drive when you are concentrating on keeping a car on the road.

Hi d.g , have not seen any flights that fly direct to  Venice from Aust, they seen to fly into Milan but it's only a short train trip from Milan to Venice so that would work. If we get a return flight Aust to Milan then we can work our way back from Barcelona to Milan on the bus or train and get to see a little of Spain and France on the way. Exploring lots of options at the moment. Planning is all part of the fun !

I think Maggie and I will be flying into Venice too.  We are thinking of leaving California around the 7th and going directly to Venice and then taking the train to Florence and Rome.  Havent set up final plans yet.

Looking for the best airfares from Aust now the early bird fares have just been released. Have to decide if we fly  direct to Rome  or fly to Venice , have a few days there, then train it down to Rome. Believe it is a great train trip from Venice to Rome.

Any one else  thought about going to Venice before  going down to Rome ?

We booked our flights and did fairly well.... We are flying out of the US on the 16th, arriving in Rome on the 17th, and flying from Barcelona back to the US on 7/29.  We are flying United.  Albany-Dulles-Rome and Barcelona-Newark-Albany.  We booked as soon as they opened and R/T for each was less than $1100.  I always do my original searches through Kayak and then book through the actual airline....

Try - kayak.com - but it is way too early to find flights for those dates at this point...
