Sitting on the Bay of Plenty, Tauranga and its surrounding areas offer many opportunities to explore the rich Maori history and culture, as well as New Zealand’s hotspots in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Hell’s Gate Geothermal Reserve in Rotorua – the geo-thermal wonderland of fiery heat, steam and magical waters – is just one place where you can walk past steaming fumeroles and pools of boiling mud, and see Kakahi Falls, the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. Take a boat ride through the Glow-Worm Cave at Waitomo; look up, and you will see millions of bioluminescent glow-worms sticking to its roof.
