AMSTERDAM HIGHLIGHTS

Anne Frank House
The house is a deeply moving museum, where visitors are given the opportunity to personally envision what happened on this very spot during World War II. The rooms of the Secret Annex – where Anne and her family hid for 25 months – have been maintained in their authentic state thanks to conscientious preservation. Displays include salvaged documents and objects belonging to the eight people in hiding. The front part of the house, Anne’s father’s former office, has been returned to the way it was before the war. The family’s story is told using quotes from Anne’s diary and with original objects, documents and photographs that bring to life the personal account of young Anne Frank.

Homo Monument
Consisting of three equal triangles made of pink granite set in the heart of Amsterdam, this monument represents the “past, present and future of the gay struggle for acceptance.” It is a poignant gathering place where gay men and women from around the world are drawn to lay flowers, take photographs, embrace one another and celebrate enduring strength and love.

Additional Optional Tours
There will be a hospitality desk at the hotel to assist you with questions during your stay. On April 20, we will offer a few optional tours to local sights and museums that you can sign-up for at the hotel the morning of April 20.

Lesbian Scene
Amsterdam is one of the gay capitals of Europe, where lesbian women and gay men enjoy such freedoms as same-sex marriage, which was legalized in 2001. In general, gay and lesbian venues are open and welcoming to anyone and include more than 100 bars and nightclubs, bookshops, sport clubs, choirs and support organizations.

Day 1 – April 18, 2014
Included excursion – Afternoon walking tour of Old Town and Red Light District

Arrival in Amsterdam: The city’s Schiphol was named ‘Europe’s best airport’ in 2007 and does everything it can to make your arrival as smooth and pleasant as possible. Most flights depart the U.S. and Canada the night prior and arrive a day later in the morning. To participate in the afternoon walking tour, you need to arrive to the hotel prior to 2 pm.

Independent transfer: Take a taxi on your own from the airport to the hotel for check-in. The cost of a taxi is approximately 40-60 Euros. Hotel shuttles are available for purchase at the airport and stop in front of the train station, near the Doubletree Hotel. If you are traveling light, we highly suggest the train from the airport to Central Station for cost and convenience. The hotel is literally steps away from the station. Hotel check-in time is 3 pm.

At approximately 2 pm our included walking tour begins. You will walk through De Jordann, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Amsterdam. We will learn about the unique architecture of this city and see many typical homes from the 17th century, now a hotspot for young professionals. Visit the colorful Red Light District. We will explore this charming city and walk along its tree-lined canals and waterways and point out different restaurants you may like to enjoy later that evening.

This evening, get acquainted with other Olivia travelers on the top floor of the Doubletree Hotel for one of the most spectacular panoramic views of Amsterdam during an informal meet and greet. Drinks are on your own.

Meals: Today’s meals are on your own

Day 2 – April 19, 2014
Included excursions – Keukenhof Gardens and walking tour with visits to Gay Amsterdam and the Anne Frank House.

When you think of The Netherlands, Dutch tulips are likely among the first things that come to mind. We will be visiting the world’s foremost tulip exhibition, Keukenhof Gardens. More than seven million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths fill over 32 hectares of gardens with color and fragrance. When visiting Amsterdam, a trip to the Keukenhof Gardens is not to be missed!

Return to the city by 12 pm then rest and lunch on your own before our walking tour begins at approximately 2 pm. We will visit the city’s Gay District and the Homo Monument. Our group will avoid the long lines and enter via the VIP entrance to tour the Anne Frank House before returning to the hotel. You may also choose to enjoy this lovely walking city on your own.
