Be sure to let your credit card companies know that you will be in Mexico, or your card may get frozen, and that will take some time to get it unfrozen.  So just give them a call and inform your C.C. companies where you will be.

I take USD and some Peso dollars along with me.  Usually I use the USD the most.

When we were at the resort in 2009 we didn't bring much cash, probably $150 or so. We wished we had brought more as most of the vendors seemed to prefer US $. When we got pesos from the cash machine it was really hard to figure out the prices on things because the vendors quoted everything in USD, and I think they actually charged more when we used pesos. It was also easier for us to figure out how much we were being charged when we spent USD.

One of the nights at the resort is a fiesta night. Last time they did this, there were a bunch of vendors right at the resort out around the pool. They only took cash, we couldn't charge their stuff to our rooms. There also used to be a bunch of vendors that set up shop in a giant tent/palapa right next to the resort out on the beach. They also only take cash, and most prefer USD.

So, how much cash you bring will really depend on how much you plan to shop, and where you plan to shop. There is a mall up the street from the resort, and I think most of the stores there take credit cards, MC and Visa anyway (I think).

We like to shop, so we'll be bringing a lot more cash this time!

Although we don't need to tip, I brought like $50 in cash (US Dollars) in $1 and $5 for extra little tips for the housekeeping and waiters.

My room then got cleaned a little faster and drinks came out a little faster.

I know that the workers prefer us dollars over pesos.

US Dollars will work relatively well for buying things, not so well for taking a bus or taxi. You won't need money at the resort, and it you go into town, your dollars will be welcome in many places. Unless you can get a marvelous exchange rate, wait to exchange when you arrive.

I called Olivia the other day and was told we really don't need much cash at all. We give them a credit card at check-in and everything at the resort is charged to that. So the only thing we need cash for would be if we want to do tips...

But... I had a similar question about changing US Dollars to Pesos. I'm wondering if I should try to do this before I leave the US. I know we will want to do some shopping in town and assume we will need cash for this. I also assume it would be better to use pesos than US dollars?

May see a silly question but as I have to convert British stirling to USA dollars would appreciate any suggestions re: how much cash I will need; I don't want to convert too much back to stirling as exchange rate not brilliant. Would appreciate advice from anyone who has been to this resort before & who has done a few trips, tipped the staff etc. thanks.
