We have a group in SF playing "lesbian mah jongg" and it's lots of fun. I'll tell you about it when we meet. 
 
For Cancun, I'm bringing a few extra cards (mostly 2011). It's vacation and I don't imagine we can expect everyone to have the new card.

I went online to learn about Mah Jongg and...I was intrigued.  So I signed-up and had my first class last night! The beginning series is 4 classes...I will miss the last one as we will be in Cancun, but my adorable and talented instructor assures me I will be ready for you :)...   I met a lovely group of women, learned about the tiles, etc. and had FUN!  I have my 2012 card and am excited to play with you in Cancun.

Nope.  Just a visual similiarity.
 
Mah Jongg is somewhat like gin, but more complicated.

lol...I am part of the Olivia staff on this trip, my first of hopefully many, Olivia Vacation Trips.

 Not sure how much time I'll have to watch your Mah Jongg 'tournaments',.... 

 I do, however, look forward to hearing all about the wild and crazy Mah Jongg in Cancun.

 My Mom's mom (my Bubbie) was really into it.  I ended up the tomboy girl that was always playing some outdoor active sport.

 Wow, 3 weeks to Cancun...yay!

I'm glad you were first to ask that. You set the tone very nicely. I think it will be okay if you do the homework,  see https://sites.google.com/site/mahjrules/home/rules


The first part is about dealing and swapping tiles. These are rituals, easy to forget, and people won't mind guiding you. But, you do need to be able to identify the tiles, understand the cards (lists of hands) and picking hands. 


You won't have enough time to think as you'd like and you'll need to be okay with that.  But it is fun!

I'm planning to bring my new set and hope you will want to bring your mah jongg card (any card, any year) and play.  And if someone else brings a set, so much the better.  I checked and there will be places to announce this and play.
