Oh yeah - I actually meant to mention to you Bet, glad to see your shoe has wandered home! And people say that shoes don't just get up and walk away!? BAH!

Hmmm - I don't think I have ever seen an explanation for who Pete is... I took the question as being facetious... As that exact same "joke" is commonplace... I don't think I have ever heard anyone use the phrase "For Pete's sake" without adding "(Who is Pete anyway?)" to the end of it...

Cut and Paste is no bother and sometimes it answers a question!

Yep, "for the love of mike," is another one that I've been known to say. LOL.  Surely didn't mean for you to do the hunting cut and paste thing! LOL.

What is the origin of the expression "for Pete's Sake"? It is a polite substitute for more profane expressions such as "for God's sake" or "for Christ's sake." In medieval times, it was considered sacrilegious to use the lord's name in vain, so when the need to curse arose, people would say this as an alternative.Interestingly, some report that "Mike" used to be used before "Pete." As late as the
1880s, people were saying "for the love of Mike," yet as times changed in the early 20th century, that phrase turned into "for the love of Pete." Some say that the name "Pete" is used because Peter was one of the apostles chosen by Jesus, later declared a saint by the church.Others speculate that another curse phrase, "for pity's sake" might have influenced the choice of the name "Pete" with its similar sounds employing the letter "p." Though it is hard to truly know how the exact name came into popular usage, one can easily understand the desire to be less graphic in curses, as today's language still has harsher and less harsh swears used by simply changing the end of the word or even just replacing one letter. "God-darn" is a good example. Others tend to be a bit less subtle in their replacement: "bull-crap!"Regardless of reasoning, idioms are constantly evolving as all aspects of language do. It may seem incredibly strange to people now to consider saying "for Mike's sake," though this was once commonplace. If you said that now, people would probably ask, "Who is Mike?" Most idioms must be memorized to truly understand them. Talk with someone for whom English is a second language and watch their face screw up as you start using different idioms and phrases that never once appeared in their English books! Well there you go! All is working out well. It's good to have a back up pair too. (So was the lost sneaker in good condition)?

Missing sneaker update: Call me a romantic (I am) but when the doorbell rang last evening I just KNEW that it was my Princess Charming with the matching sneaker in hand. Alas, it was not she. Instead it was our state rep soliciting for votes. Thankfully, she recognized me from a LGBTQ event in which I spoke to get an ordinance passed in the township (successfully!). But no sneaker Sad

I called my neighbor a few minutes ago and mentioned my sneaker. She said she wondered where it originated!!! YAY… my sneaker was lost but now is found. (Sorry for the biblical reference -  it’s usually not my style). And, I had already ordered another pair of orthotics and bought a new pair of sneakers so, I guess I’ll have two now. Yes, life is good and Michele & I had a great laugh. Big Smile Hahaha!

Oh for pete's sake! LOL. (Who is pete, anyway)?

We ordered waterproof hikers from L.L. Bean. The wife's are fine. Mine? Not so much. I've hemmed and hawed too long to return them, so am keeping them but they aren't comfortable enough to wear for hours on end, so probably won't even bother to bring them. Did go out and buy a pair of sneaker type shoes in a style I know I can wear without problems.

Maybe you'll get lucky and your missing shoe will turn up?

Tips for waterproofing your footwear!

#1 – spray your footwear outdoors, preferably not while you’re wearing them.

#2 – spray with the breeze so that you don’t receive a silicone bath on your face… do not spray if windy.

#3 – bring footwear indoors to dry for the recommended time period on the can. This will also mitigate theft!

Story behind these tips: In my Girl Scout like preparation for the possibility of inclement weather on board ship and in port, I sprayed my sneakers yesterday with a can of weatherproofing. Yes, I have a wee bit of common sense and so I championed steps #1 and #2 without issue. However, I failed #3 because I left them outdoors to dry for a day and when I arrived home from work today, one sneaker was missing! Besides for the fact that it poured rain today and the waterproofing did not hold for sneaker #1…. I suspect that sneaker #2 is on someone’s porch, compliments of a neighborly dog or raccoon or deer or some person with a sneaker fetish? The insult to injury is that they contained custom orthotics and so now I must buy new sneakers and have a new pair of orthotics made before we set sail!

Sorry for the long rant my friends, but I found this situation to be comical and just wanted to share a laugh! Needless to say, my partner Michele will never let me live it down! Confused

Bet
