Joyce is correct.  They scan just like at airports.  In fact, you will place your stuff on the same scanning machine each and every time you come back on the ship in the ports.  It is exactly like the security scanners at the airport.

The security boarding is the same as an airport. The detector can see bottles of liquid. If they find it they will keep it until you leave the ship in Canada.

Can anyone tell me if your luggage is searched before you get on board? What is preventing me from putting a fifth of bourbon in my suitcase to take on board? Thanks!

Thanks for the information.  It helps to get someone "real" to answer the question.  Both times we have been on an Olivia with HAL they have not bothered us for bringing wine out of our cabin.  Just go to the bar and ask for a wine glass and then how can they tell where the wine came from.  Some of the women we were with even brought the open bottle to the table in the dining room and the staff never balked.  As other's have said................save the money for the excursions rather than pay the HAL price for a glass of wine.

Hi I persisted and got through to a real person at US Border Protection and the word back is US Customs in Vancouver is a pre clearnace..which means they "check to see that all paperwork is in order" for when we arrive in the US (Juneau etc)...which means the wine is not being taken into US territory technically as it is going onto the ship..and as long as it stays on the ship and is consumed on the ship then US does not have a say...the duty on wine is around $1-2 a bottle if it were to be taken off the ship onto US ground..hope that helps...I also spoke wo an officer at  Juneau US customs to verify this...so we are going to take afew bottles on to enjoy  keep the bottles in our cabin and pour what we want/need to be out and about..worst Holland Amercia can do is ask us to return to our cabin to consume wine brought on board or charge a corkage fee if we insist on drinking it outside our cabin if directed to do so...hope this helps

There is always much discussion about what you can bring on board beverage wise.  Wine, champagne and soda all seem "legal".  We have walked on board on HAL cruises with 6-packs of soda (1 Dr. Pepper and 1 Pepsi as we don't drink a lot of soda but we're on vacation LOL) and bottled water (but this time we are going to take our travel Britta bottles instead).  We are also going to pick up some wine in BC and bring that on as well.  I'm suspect about bringing on beer, however.  I don't see any reference to beer on HAL, just wine and champagne

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES BROUGHT ON BOARD Except for wine and champagne, alcoholic beverages purchased in the ship’s stores or otherwise brought on the ship cannot be consumed on the ship. Bottles and other containers will be collected for safekeeping and delivered to your stateroom on the last day of the voyage. The ship’s stores sell liquor for take-home only at reduced tax-free prices. These purchases will be delivered to your stateroom on the last day of the voyage. A corkage fee of US$18.00 (subject to change) applies to wine and champagne brought to the restaurants or bars for consumption. In-Room Dining offers reduced-price stateroom beverage packages for in-stateroom consumption of alcoholic beverages. (A 15% Service Charge on all beverage items and packages with beverages will be added)

yes, u can bring wine,, sparkling or still... beer as well, but i would suggest buying it in Vancouver. the airlines are not very friendly with big bottles of liquid in your luggage. i was bringing a bottle of BBQ sauce back from Houston and they completely went thru my luggage and left  a note from the FAA about the sauce.. pretty funny, but a hassle.
