I was in Vancouver on Wednesday for business.  There were about 20 - 30 folks that had just got off the Volendam that were catching Skytrain to go to the airport.  It was only 8:05 so they would have been at YVR by just after 8:30.

There was only one ship in, so customs would have been quick and easy, but I found it interesting that they were on the train that early.

Sure was fun seeing one of the "Dam" ships waiting to go to Alaska. WOO HOO............soon it will be us.

This has been asked on our facebook group as well: https://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/groups/344151362274778/

I just wanted to post my reply here too in case anyone is still wondering...

I personally ALWAYS book our flights for an 11:30-ish departure. I don't like sitting around the airport, so that's how I roll. So far, I have never had an issue with making it to my flight on time... So if you wish to book an earlier flight, do it! Just make sure when the ship asks about your departure plans that you give them accurate detailed info so they can help prioritize your departure from the ship to help minimize any delays...

A couple of days before we get back to Vancouver, they will ask you on the ship what are your travel plans after disembarkation and prioritize thosewomen who have early travel plans.  On the last couple of trips, it seems like most folks have been off the ship by around 9:30, as they are turning the boat around quickly for the next passengers so an early disembarkation could easily be 8:30.

I know from experience that you need to be at the Vancouver Airport 1 1/2 hours ahead of leaving as it is a big airport and you need to clear US customs prior to boarding the plane.  If you don't have a lot of luggage, the "Skytrain" leaves for the airport ever 5 - 10 minutes on a Sunday and it is about a 20 minute trip from the cruiseship terminal (Waterfront Station) to the Airport.  On leaving the ship, you will have to clear Canadian customs, haul yourself and your luggage to the Skytrain station (only about a 5 minute walk) and then when you get to the airport the station is in the International Terminal, so only 5 minute walk to the check-in counter.................That is assuming that you have no mobility issues.  Smile

So it is tight, but I really thing doable.  JMHO

Cheers,  Heather

Need opinion from previous Olivia travelers!
02/24/2012, 9:58 AM

This is my first trip and trying to make airline reservations from Atlanta.  In looking at return flights after the cruise I am trying to make a decision and I need an experienced travelers opinion.   Being aware that the information letter says they suggest you do not book a flight prior to 12 noon on the last day, the only choice I have is either 11:30 in the morning or that night (nothing in the afternoon at all).  I really really really don't want to hang around until that night so I am asking what my chances are (based on previous trips) to make a flight 30 min earlier than what they recommend.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
