Sondraseiler, they normally have it open when at anchor, unless the weather is bad (rough seas)

For those of you who have been on this trip previously, when we are anchored, is the back of the ship open for kayaking and getting in the water?  I'm trying to get a sense of when they open that area up.  Also when we're in Bora Bora for 2 days and not on an excursion what might there be to do there?  Is there a marketplace for crafts?  What about the other islands also? Thanks!

Hi,

Wow! Great idea, thank you for doing the research on that.  My partner and I are still trying to figure out what we will do.  We have another trip before this one that is taking a lot of our time (and money) so I am afraid we cannot commit to anything right now.  Hopefully you will get more people interested and can arrange to have this tour pick up at the airport, it would be great to make in an all Olivia ladies tour!  I am very grateful for all your information and appreciate you keeping me posted.

Ali,

Did some research and found a full day tour which sounds interesting. It's Papeete inner island full-day jeep safari. The price is $105 dollars approx. The tour operators pick up from the local hotels or other know places in Pateete but after calling the booking agent I was told depending on how many need picked up at the airport they might consider doing a pickup there also at the end of the tour one of the drop off points is the wharf. I inquired about luggage and I was told to call back Monday so the agent could get information on what we could do about are luggage.

I'm thinking that there might be other Olivians that don't want to spend so much for a "Day Hotel" and maybe we can get enough ladies interested so they would pick us up at the airport. If I remember correctly theres room for either 26 or 36 people.

I really thing $105 is a lot better then the cost of the hotel. Below is the site and phone number of the company who does the booking. They have all the details and it sound like a great way to see Papeete until it's time to board the ship.

Hello again,

Thank you for the support of the idea ladies!  We certainly knew that when we booked this trip it was going to be one of our more expensive ones (I think I read somewhere that Tahiti is a destination for the middle to upper class and honeymooners!).  Any money we can save in one area will allow us to have great adventures while we are on the cruise.  We had considered renting a car for the day as it was certainly less expensive than a day room (Avis has a car for about $130 with unlimited mileage), but in the end felt after a night of traveling we did not want to sit in a car for hours driving around the island.  Apparently the taxi is about $35 each way, so even if we had to take a taxi to Papeete, then back to the airport and then back to Papeete it would be cheaper than a day room at this time.  T47, I will check with my partner and see if we can finalize our plans, but certainly if we choose a taxi we are more than willing to share and help you out a bit.  I can certainly let you know.  There are lots of things to do while walking around the downtown Papeete.  Here is a link to a wakling tour from Frommers you might find interesting to help take care of your day http://www.frommers.com/destinations/tahiti/0084010008.html

Again thank you for your input Evergreen, very much appreciated.

Have a great day.

Ali

Oops, I misunderstood thought La Truck was some sort of tour or something.. Any suggestions of things to do as I think I still use the airport storage for my suitcase..

Ginger, the most reasonable way to travel in Tahiti is on Le Truck. It's their local bus line: http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Australia_and_Oceania/French_Polynesia/Tahiti-1907465/Transportation-Tahiti-Le_Truck-BR-1.html

Papeete is only about 4 miles at most, from the airport so it's a shortish Le Truck ride. However I should tell you of one of our experiences on Le truck which made it not such a short ride timewise: The locals travel on Le Truck, we made an unscheduled stop for someone to buy beer at a roadside store. Not long after we had to make another unscheduled stop for the same person because he had drunk a beer & he had to pee!!! So it wasn't a speedy trip but it was interesting!!!

Le Truck is far less expensive than a cab. I think Ali has a great idea.

Ali, could you give me the info you have on Le Truck? I to want to travel on a budget and the price for the "Day Hotel" is ridiculous for what about a 7 hour stay???

Julie, isn't the airport in Pepeete close to everything? I was told sense there will not be a transfer, that everything was close and it's a short inexpensive cab ride?? Ali maybe we can somehow workout a way to share a cab and save us even more money...

Anybody else have any ideas for those of us not wanting to pay soooo much for the "Day Hotels"??

Oops, pardon me!! I was just looking at the airport facilities & they do have luggage storage. Neat. I think your idea is a great one although it's a shame you'd have to go all the way back to the airport before boarding. The town of Papeete is interesting, especially the market. There are some neat sidewalk bars/restaurants along the waterfront too.
