I enjoyed my first Olivia experience, I was trying to figure out what made sick, to avoid it next time. Everybodies in put is great.I also had the same reaction from nurse Ratchet. I had two flue shots (made for Canadaians), but I also got very sick, and felt better and it came back again. I now feel like my old self. Thank goodness, and hope every body can say the same.  Wanda

Sorry about everyone's ailments.  I'm sure it's a coincidence, but I have had a headache since we returned last week.  K.C. had land sickness for the first couple of days - which she has never had before, but she's finally over that now.

Oh well, I'd still go back in a heartbeat....

LOL Bunny is not a nurse- but she is the most knowledgeable person I have ever met when it comes to H1N1- she has done her research, and belongs to an online group who discuss it continually......she is one smart Bunny!

This was my first cruise ever and I was surprised that I didn't need motion sickness medicine!  I have a history of getting very sick on boats if the water is rough so this was great!  In addition, I haven't experienced any land sickness.  The only sickness I have is a really bad sinus thing (now).  I got sick on the last day of the cruise and was exhausted. Basically I got up, ate breakfast and went back to bed.  I was just wiped out.  When Colleen won at Bingo, I couldn't even muster any form of excitement and she won over 1100 bucks!  My throat was raw and I was only able to have a little energy.  I wasn't hungry but I got up for the show and dinner and drank lots of hot tea to try to soothe my throught.  I don't know if I had the flu or not.  I started to feel better and then a couple of days ago, I got worse.  I would cough so much that I threw up and couldn't hold down anything.  I went to the doctor yesterday and I am not sure what the diagnosis was.  He said my lungs were clear but my sinuses and post nasal are a mess.  He didn't give me any meds or test me for anything (other than an abdomen exam).  He told me that my tummy was just a wreck and that I need to try to eat little bits of food and drink little bits of water until my stomach calms down.  It was weird...so I am still coughing up a lung and blowing my nose.  I should have gone to the dr on the ship while I was feeling my most exhausted huh OR maybe I should have gone to Nurse Bunny (I didn't know you were a nurse)!  Surprise

I don't think what everyone got came from Mexico!

All it takes is one person to come on board the ship with the start of illness and it will soon spread to all those in contact with that person…and so on

Bunny....Didn't realize you are a nurse...I'm a psychiatric NP.  great info.  Given the fact that we were in Mexico, it would make sense that we would have been hit with the "Mexican version" of the H1N1.  Also...The vaccine they gave in the states may not have covered the virus which presented in Mexico.  I'd say it's possible this was H1N1 because I have never felt so sick...and exhausted...for such a long time before!  Hopefully I'm getting back to myself now.  Thanks for all the info....

I have been ok for 2 days. Last year was my first cruise and it took about a week before the land sickness went away.

It appears to take less time after each cruise.

70% of folks were "covered" by a single shot...meaning 30% required 2 shots for the vaccine to be fully effective.  Of course, when the shot was hard to come by, they didn't want to tell folks that.  It really is a 2-shot vaccine to ensure effectiveness.  Also, as the virus has mutated away from the original vaccine target, mutations of the flu may not be as easily dealt with by those who did receive the vaccine anyway.

In Mexico when this originally started, almost 40% of those affected did not initially have a high fever.  The high fever tends to follow when the case becomes more severe, or it becomes accompanied by a secondary respiratory bacterial infections (pnuemonia).  Children tended to get the higher fever sooner than it would set in for adults.  If you are a "fever person", then it can be very high for many days (103+). -but less severe cases often present with no or a lower fever (96 vs. 98).

I had the H1N1 vaccine, but the symptoms you describe sure match those I had. I thought H1N1 came with a high fever though.  Whatever this is, I wish it would go away!!!  Hope others are beginning to feel better.  BTW...Marsha dealt with 2 nurses.  One was very nice; the other Nurse Ratched!

I would recommend whenever you go on a cruise to Mexico or Central America you get your flu shot since it appears the H1N1 may have started there, I had my shot in november and did not feel any effects from the flu. However my face did from the pavement, lol. I must say the nurse and doctor were very nice and helpful when they treated me. Maybe they were happy it was simply different from the flu,. The ship def needs some work and the staff was rusty but helpful. I hope the Mexican Rivera is a bigger ship. I can't wait to see Cabo again
