Yeah Vermont! Hurray for Iowa!
By the way, California IS trying; we've won the "Vermont" way twice (and had the Governator veto those wins) and won again via our Supreme Court ruling - and now we are waiting to hear whether or not the "People" were able to vote away our equality -- that's three wins and we're still not able to marry!
I do feel that the California action has spurred many other states to advance their own cause and bring those changes about even more quickly than they would have otherwise - which is excellent! And other states recognizing gay marriages from out of state will trigger more change ... one step at a time. Internationally, we've seen some countries make big advances in civil rights: Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa (before America??.), Spain, Sweden = all with equality in marriage!
All this change during our lifetime ... from hiding in the closet to sailing the high seas ... Next, the federal level and elimination of DADT in the military.
It is great to see these changes. Believe me, the coastal areas of California were "all in" - it's the valleys and inland areas that might as well be another state entirely. But change is coming and to ALL of California.
Best to all,
Barb
