I am totally hooked on this new drama out of the UK on Logo. When I first saw it advertised, I thought it was another of those cheesy women in prison series that would most likely have a couple of stereotypical scary *** characters, mean guards and the a bunch of D-list actresses. Instead, its a compelling character study of the lives of women serving time in an old, British prison. Of course, the most compelling storyline is that of Helen Stewart and Nikki Wade. Helen is a liberal Wing Governor and Nikki is a prisoner in for killing a police officer that was raping her girlfriend. These two women fell in love in Season 1 in a complex dance of hate and attraction.
Normally I find it annoying to watch straight women portray lesbians in film and TV. But something happened for these two actresses, because they have a chemistry that has sparked a phenomenon in Britain, Europe, South Africa, New Zealand and now the US where the series just started airing on Logo. Really, no kidding. There's something amazingly sensual, sexy and intelligent (and convincing) about the relationship between these two women.
Check it out! I'm curious what other women think of this show, these actresses, the writing and why the Nikki-Helen story is so powerful across orientations, genders and countries.
