I'm going to check out a couple of those films you mentioned that I have yet to see. Thanks.

I have been inspired by a mix of films from mob movies, many of which are great examples of creating a hero's journey and drawing out big emotional moment.

I think my major influences are films like Sankofa where the storytelling is unique and the human emotions explored unmistakeable but the filmmaking has a subtlety.

Okay, I'll start the chat with my influences:

Lisa Cholodenko's film, High Art (seriously, it changed my life and the cinematography is amazing!)

Better Than Chocolate - cute little fun movie, I'd like to make a cult classic like this one day

The Amazing Adventures of Two Girls in Love, again a cute little movie, but I love the commentary on the film and the inside info that the director offered. Laurel Holloman was amazing in this film and I liked the introduction of androgyny starting with the opening scene.

Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal - call me a geek but a return to the classics like this really taught me a lot about saying things on screen with vocalizations, also, I think we could all use a little existential wandering in our lives.

More recently, The Gits movie produced by Jessica Bender and directed by Kerri O'Kane. It's a documentary on Mia Zapata and her time with The Gits before she was savagely raped and murdered. Mia was a huge musical influence on me (bass girl is for bass like your face, not fishing!) and to see how these women could be so personable and real with the story moved me emotionally. On top of that, Jessica and Kerri ended the movie on a positive voice about how her murder inspired the Home Alive and Take Back the Night initiatives to protect women.
