Hi Midi,

I suggest you check www.weather.com in both Juneau and Sitka, Alaska just before you finish packing to get the actual temperature of the are. From past trips at the same time of year, it was cool on the ship and zodiacs with the wind, (and warmed up quite a bit when on shore). Dressing in layers is essential, especially when hiking. I suggest a lighter jacket when on shore, wearing a few layers that you can peel off. Rain is also something to plan for. Mos tof this information is in your expedition booklet :-)

Let me know if you have any other questions. Feel free to email me directly at jillc@olivia.com. I have access to my emails 24/7.  I do not check this site very often, especially when traveling.  Thanks!

Hi Jill,

This is my first Olivia cruise and my first time to visit Alaska. I am getting very excited and am headed for the REI store tomorrow to look at boots. What fun!  How warm does it get in the daytime?

Thanks so much for putting a book for us. I'm sure it will be very helpful.

 Talk to you soon.

Who is getting excited for this trip besides me?  :-) I am preparing a Pre-Departure book for all of you to have in the next 4 weeks. It will review what to bring and other fun and important information to help you prepare for the trip.  You DO need to have waterproof boots that come just below the knee for wet landings on shore.  I suggest Muck boots, but you can find other less expensive alternatives as well.  Just make sure they can be rinsed off easily and are comfortable to hike in as you will be trekking through mud on shore.  Also, for wet landings, you need them high enough (just below the knee) so that your feet do not get wet.

While on the ship, I like having a pair of Uggs to quickly put on when we hear the Expedition leader tell us there are whales on the port side! :-). They keep your feet toasty warm, and are pretty light to wear or to pack.

More tips to come in the materials!
