For those who are wanting to know about obtaining a visa at the border, the following link is for the Turkish Embassy:

http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-fees-at-border-gates-for-2010.en.mfa

Unfortunately is does seem that those travelling on Canadian passports do pay more than those on US or Australian passports.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in a few months.

Kathy

Hi everyone. You DO NOT need to get a Turkish Visa ahead of time!  They can be purchased at the Istanbul Airport WHEN YOU ARRIVE for only $20. It takes only a few minutes! The Visa station is to the left, next to where you show your passport and pass through immigration. Be sure you have at least 2 blank pages in your Passport for this - VERY important!

When I did the Site Inspection last October, I went right to the Passport line, not knowing I needed a Visa - after waiting 15 minutes in the Passport line, they directed me BACK to the Visa line to have my passport stamped with the Visa, paid $20, then got back into the passport line.  I have always said I do these inspections for a reason, and these things always happen to me so I can help YOU do it right!

So - DO NOT waste your money and time getting the Visa ahead of time - just be sure you have a $20US bill when you arrive in Istanbul, stop by the Visa line FIRST, then the passport line - you will be fine.

Jill :-)

OBTAINING VISA TO TURKEY AT

THE EMBASSY OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY IN OTTAWA

Due to the high volume of applications for Turkish visas, the Consular Section is not in a position to provide a specific duration for visa processing. Therefore we strongly suggest that you apply for visas, well before (e.g. one month) the planned visit to Turkey. As the visas are valid for 3 months from the date of issue, applications must be made no earlier than 3 months before your planned traveling date to Turkey. If you are the citizen of a country for whom visa can be issued at the point of entry in Turkey, it is highly recommended to obtain visa at the point of entry

Canadian ordinary passport holders also can obtain a visa from the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa at a cost of CAD$ 75.00 for a single entry or CAD$ 206.00 for multiple entries both valid for 90 days. Visas are valid for 90 days from the date of issue. The visa fee is applied per person, not per passport, and applies to children listed on parent's passport. (Visa fee for the citizens of all other countries is subject to change)

The validity period of the passport should cover at least six months from the date of the issuance of the visa.

The following are required from Canadian citizens if they choose to obtain their visas from this Embassy, prior to their departure.

· Passport (original)

· Fee: CAD$ 75.00 (single entry) / CAD$ 206.00 (multiple entry) as a money order payable to “Turkish Embassy”. Personal cheques are not accepted. Cash is accepted when the application is made in person

· Fee for return postage: CAD$ 15 as a money order payable to “Turkish Embassy” and Self-addressed return envelope (preferably 10.5" x 8.5"). Personal cheques are not accepted. Cash is accepted when the application is made in person

· 1 Passport size photo

· Application form (for ordinary passport holders)

Conditions subject to change without notice.

Holders of Canadian official passports must obtain their visa only from the Embassy.

Visa Application Form for the holders of Canadian Official Passport

If the planned stay exceeds 90 days or the individual intends to study, work or be engaged in any kind of gainful employment in Turkey, an appropriate visa must be obtained. An application for this purpose has to be made to this Embassy. The Embassy does not provide assistance in finding employment in Turkey.

Holders of Canadian official passports can obtain their visa only from the Embassy. A diplomatic note from the passport office is required for official travels. Canadian official passports are subject to visa fee if the intended trip is for pleasure.

Holders of Canadian travel documents must obtain a visa from this Embassy prior to departure and apply as same like nationals of all other countries.

Visa fees are non-refundable.

NATIONALS OF ALL OTHER COUNTRIES WHO ARE RESIDENT IN CANADA

OK, Jill says the visas are really easy to get at the airport in Istanbul. It's right next to Immigration. US citizens pay $20, we Canadians must have been real bad 'cos we have to pay $60, according to the Embassy site!!!!!!

Forgot to add that I've been trying to get clarification from the Embassy in Ottawa but can't reach them by phone & when I e-mail they just refer me to the website!!!

I've asked Jill if she needed one last year but haven't heard from her yet.

Hi Marigold. They are referring to passengers arriving in Turkey by cruise ship & then leaving on the same ship:

For cruise passengers: Those cruise passengers coming to a Turkish port of call by a cruise ship and thereafter leave Turkey by the same cruise ship for another country, are exempt from visa for a maximum period of 72 hours (with the permission given by the local security authorities).

I hope I'm wrong but I read it that we wuld need a visa if arriving by plane.

Hold on Julie.....did you read some more?  Your link states if you are a cruise passenger not staying more than 72 hours, you don't need the visa.  Am I reading this correctly?
