Appreciate the info.  How long ago were ya'll living there and when was the gay cruise ship forbidden to disembark?  It sure puts a damper in going ashore for excursions.....

Having lived in the US Virgin Islands for seven years with my partner, we can tell you that, while there are no draconian laws against being gay, it is definitely NOT lgbt friendly.  We received our share of death threats while living there, and the police would never help us.  When a gay male cruise ship came in, there was mass hysteria in the press for the week beforehand, and lots of protests, anger, harsh words and threatened physical violence.  One such gay cruise to one island (St. Croix, not St. Thomas) ended up forbidding passengers from getting off the ship there, such was the anger, and the islanders celebrated their "victory" for a month.

I am not looking forward to returning.  I may stay on the boat and read a book that day.

But if you decide to explore, I suggest taking the ferry over to St. John, where it is a tad friendlier, and the beaches are unmatched anywhere in the world.  Also, despite the anti-gay feelings, the jewelry shops in St. Thomas sell a lot of pride jewelry.  We bought matching rainbow drop pendants there, once, that we still wear all the time.

Sint Maarten is the Dutch Virgin Islands- while same-sex marriage is legal in the Netherlands, last I knew it was only legal for Dutch citizens marrying other Dutch citizens or permanent residents. St. Thomas and St. John are the US Virgin Islands, and just like most of the rest of the US, nothing legal for us there. So you can have a ceremony anywhere you would like during the cruise, but it won't be a legal one.

Wow!  Two couples from our neck of the woods (Texas & Georgia).  We are from Louisiana!  Good luck with the wedding plans and look forward to meeting ya'll on the trip.

I really appreciate this question & responses as I'm hoping that my partner and I will be getting "married" on board.  (I haven't asked her yet but I'm hoping she will say yes!)

 Very exciting.

There are group commitment ceremonies on every Olivia trip.  As far as the Bahamas, not so gay friendly Sad  Not sure about St Martin or St Thomas. I had more than one anti-gay experience in bahamas, remember how they treated those families on Rosie's ship in the Bahamas? those poor children were being yelled at, I felt so bad for them.  Do your research and see if you can find a gay friendly beach wedding option at one of the ports.

Best of luck.

My wife and I were married on the beach in Key West on last years Halloween Cruise. It's not recognized by any state but we arranged to be married by a minister that was traveling on the cruise with us. They do have a commitment ceremony on every Olivia Cruise. You can set up a ceremony on the beach at any port but you have to do all the leg work and planning yourself.

Hope this helps

My partner and I are thinking of having a wedding on the beach ... but are flexible to changes that may be necessary. Last cruise I was on had a big group ceremony on board at sea. Anybody know if lesbians can get married/have commitment ceremonies on the island (what are the laws in the Bahamas?) and does Olivia have ceremony on board every cruise? Would there be possibility for smaller ceremony on board or on island? Many inquiring minds would like to know!  :-)
