I have family in Mexico City…someday I wish to bring my GF for a visit!

We will be going to Cancun and we live in Mexico.  It's always a good idea as listed below to let your credit card company know.  Never let a waiter or someone walk off with your card to run it....they should be doing it in front of you or with the electronic scanner they can carry...much safer for you.

I would suggest getting a few pesos.  If you want to do any local shopping it's cheaper in pesos, they will charge you much more in dollars and tell you it's a deal.  Most places do take credit cards though.  If you check with your bank they should change the dollar into pesos free of charge but you shouldn't need alot.  If you have a few different credit cards I would check to see who charges for exchange rate and who doesn't.  We have a US American Express card and they don't charge us for the exchange rate into pesos when we use it here at home.

If you use a cash machine at the airport just don't take out to much and be very descrete about it.  It's safe but always stay on the safe side.  OK well i hope that helps someone.  Looking forward to meeting you all.

This has happened to me travelling in Canada and travelling in South America.  If your card does get cut off because you forgot to let them know that you were travelling, you can simply call them and have it turned back on.  Of course, it is even more simple to just let them know before you go.

Something to keep in mind when traveling outside of the country, notify your credit card companies that you are going to be using your specific credit cards during specified dates and in Cancun.  If they see a lot of activity on a card, the have been known to shut it off.  I had this happen to a friend while she was on a cruise, A lot of expensive phone calls to get it reactivated.  Just wanted to share.

We haven't been to the Cancun resort yet, but we just got back from the Puerto Vallarta trip, and we did not need pesos.  In the tourist towns, most everyone takes dollars, though you will get change in pesos.  Plus, most places you go probably take credit cards, which will be billed in pesos at the prevailing exchange rate.

And at Vallarta Palace, in case we did need pesos, there was an ATM machine in the resort that dispensed pesos.  I don't know if Cancun has one, but I would think they would.  In any case, you can use any ATM machine in the country, and it will of course dispense pesos on demand.  So, I wouldn't bring pesos.  If you end up wanting or needing them, it's easy to get them.
