Weasel uses the cane 24/7 when out in public, and around the house sometimes on bad days. We will be bringing the wheelchair, as it is really needed on our excursions that involve a lot of walking. A little walking she can and will do with the cane, but we can't usually predict the good days and bad days, except to know that if she does a lot of walking on day 1, then day 2 will be a chair day. haha
On the ship she will be using her cane unless the boat is rocking a lot, then I make her stay in the chair to prevent a painful lurch that could produce a few bad days afterward. ;)
She can't really reinjur herself, but her activity determines the amount of pain she'll be in later. She doesn't want to be hurting the whole trip, nor does she want to be so loopy on pain meds that she doesn't think straight or remember all the fun she had!
I'm a disabled army vet myself and have had a couple of bilateral knee surgeries and patella realignments. (I had dual Joe Theisman-like injuries) Lucky for me, Tramadol keeps the pain in check, so I can continue on my happy, doped up way. haha!
(actually, Tramadol is a pain supressant that doesn't interfer with other mental processes, so unlike nearly every other painkiller, I can still fully function/work/drive, etc. without dopey-head side effects.)
