sorry for my late response, i haven't been on this page in a few days. yes, santa monica is a great place to stay. it's a little far if you wanted to do all the touristy stuff like go to hollywood, see grauman's chinese, and all. however, all that can be a little kitschy. yes, danielle7 made some great recommendations. father's office has really good burgers along w/ good beer. the "gay scene" is inland more in west hollywood. public transportation here in la is pretty awful. getting around can be trying and expensive. if you want relaxing, then santa monica is a great choice. yes, message me on the dates you'll be in town and i would love to meet up with you and danielle7. cheers!

It's true, the water here is probably colder than most of your beaches. You can swim but it is chilly. We do have lots of sand though and often times there are dolphin sightings. The beaches are nice. Will Rogers and Zuma beach are good for swimming. The Malibu beaches (just north of Santa Monica) are my favorite. Venice beach is good for people watching and worth going to at least once. There's also a path all along the beach where you can rent bikes and ride up or down the coast. It's not expensive and really pretty.

I like the Library Ale House or Venice Ale House for drinks. I've also heard good things about a bar/restaurant called Father's Office. There are a lot of restaurants and bars in the area. There aren't a lot of gay bars in that area (just one called Roosterfish in Venice) but the whole neighborhood is gay friendly.

Abbot Kinney is another fun neighborhood worth visiting just 10 minutes south of Santa Monica.

Sounds good .Im going to be staying at the one of the YHAs,doesnt look too bad Anywhere good to go for a drink? Also whats the beaches in Santa Monica like to swim and see ?

I figure very different to Australian beaches ?

Sounds good! Santa Monica is close to me and I'm usually there once or twice a week. We can definitely meet up for a drink.

Thanks for replying I think i will stay in Santa Monica area, I'm not specifically looking to look at much, just want to relax and be cruisy .

Hi, I'm in LA as well. I'd suggest staying in the Santa Monica/ Venice area (close to the beach, lots of things within walking distance etc). LA has a lot of great neighborhoods but it's pretty spread out so depending on how long you are here, you may want to rent a car. Or if there are specific things you want to see, I'm sure we can point you in the right direction.

I'm happy to meet up with both of you for a drink too if it works out....I also used to live in San Francisco as well if you have any questions about neighborhoods there etc. They are both great cities- I'm sure you'll have a fun trip. :)

Thanx for replying ill be getting in 28th August. Any good neighborhoods to stay in?Ive got somewhere to stay the first night, close to LAX for my mate, but have no plans after that. Would be great to have someone to see have a look around L.A with!
