"Olivia's former execs want it both ways
In response to "Rough sailing for Olivia" [September 20]: I'm a native San Franciscan, a black woman who came out at 16, former CPA, and an award-winning comedian. I've performed on Olivia trips for two and a half years. My income from Olivia is a small portion of my livelihood – loss of income isn't my motivation for writing. It's because for many years, I've experienced the profoundly positive effects that Olivia and Judy Dlugacz, as visionary of Olivia, have had on the lesbian community.
Since 1973, Olivia has been a groundbreaking company, significantly essential to the lesbian identity. Now there are people, who after five years of involvement, have called for the dissolution of a company, which previous to their arrival, had 30 years of sustained success. Companies have internal turmoil without demanding company dismantling for personal profit. That's irrational. They cite jealousy for their dismissal. What's this? High school? Why would Judy be jealous? She created the company – the majority owner. They were plotting their "coup" while at Olivia, reaping its perks and financial benefits. It's apparent the jealousy was directed at Judy. The article references e-mails that are part of the lawsuit, that refer to the pending takeover of Olivia, as "D-Day." Doesn't that invoke a warm, fuzzy feeling, when lesbians use military terms, in planning to "do in" another lesbian? Judy probably should have saved the cost of the "life coach," instead hiring an exorcist, to rid Olivia of the demonic influences trying to possess the company.
Why, if Olivia was "taking advantage" of the lesbian community, didn't Amy Errett, as CEO, alter that unfair situation or leave? She stayed for five years. After her dismissal, she voices concern. They can't have it both ways – entitled to $30 million for their enhancement of the company, yet not responsible for the "alleged" monopolistic practices happening, during the same time. Olivia isn't a monopoly. The lack of competition is due to Judy's established excellence in being dedicated to serving the lesbian community. Olivia has to make money to reinvest back into the company, in order to combat spiraling business costs in the travel industry. Costs that are often determined by outside forces – 9/11, oil prices, the Bush economic policy.
Olivia has survived because of Judy's "Herculean" efforts. I've witnessed, on a few occasions, passengers coming to Judy to say there's something they needed in their cabin and she personally made sure that need was met.
This is a temper tantrum disguised as legal action. Stand with Judy Dlugacz and the rest of the "Olivia Nation" in support of Olivia's right to remain a viable and functional part of the lesbian community.
