I live in Interior Alaska (the Fairbanks area)and have only visited the Anchorage and the Peninsula , but I agree... Ketchikan and Anchorage are similar in temps..around the 50's F (10's*C) in September.... with Ketchikan and that area getting a little more rainfall than Anchorage, generally.
I chill easy and the wet weather here always feels particularly damp and bone-chilling to me, so sturdy sweaters and/or polar fleece are a good thing to have on hand. Some kind of raingear or raincoat, a lighter weight lined jacket, and a hat or cap with lightweight gloves for comfort's sake on chilly morns, warm socks, comfortable lightweight hiking boots if you're going to be out and about in nature. Like the jacket, they don't hafta be arctic grade rated for minus 40* F :) ....just enough to keep the chill off of you. I'd pack along good sunglasses, a little sunscreen and/or cap. The sun seems more intense up here, too, it seems. ...and the combination of cloudy days on the water can leave you burned. :( IMO, layers of clothing, ...like a turtleneck with a sweater over it... that can be added and removed as the temps change is the way to go.
For anyone planning excursions or post-excursions up to Denali or the Fairbanks area, the "averages" for Mid-September in Fairbanks are nighttime lows of 40F (4*C) and daytime highs of 65F(18*C). The Interior,Fairbanks in particular, is known for its extreme temp swings (lows of -60F (-51*C) in Winter and highs of 90F (32*C) in Summer) . In late August in Fairbanks, I've awakened to frost on the cranberries, stripped down to a T-shirt by noon and then pulled on a sweater or polar fleece jacket by mid-afternoon/evening. Anchorage, in comparison, is much more moderate.
And it's anybody's guess whether Fairbanks will get an early snow this year. Locally, we watch the dustings of snow in the high country for signs of approaching Winter.
You might get a kick out of visiting one of our live Alaska cam sites on the internet that shows the weather outside at the moment.
Here's wishing all of you a GREAT time on your adventure!!!
