Thanks for all the great information. I hadn't thought about the train until I read it here...great idea! I'm flying into Seattle on Fri (Sep 14), staying overnight in Seattle then taking the train to Vancouver. I booked the Amtrak at 10:45am from 303 South Jackson Street/King Street Station (Seattle) to the 1150 Station Street/Pacific Central Station (Vancouver). Is there a difference between "Amtrak" and "Amtrak Cascades"? I see both online and am wondering if I'm on the right train.

There will definately be a gathering the night before the cruise, if it's not an official one at the host hotel we will organise one ourselves on this forum! Quite  a few of us are staying at the YWCA  so I am sure  there will be a bit of partying happening there the week before the cruise!

Got inpatient and nervous about booking train back so ended up finding a great deal on Alaska Air and used code ECMB38

that Olivia provided.  Hotel & round trip flight for $770 from PDX . . .not bad!  Hotel may not be the finest but we don't plan on doing anything but sleep there!  (Super 8 Vancouver) they offer a $15 shuttle to dock too!

Now we're ready to roll!

Anybody want to hook up for dinner/drinks?Cool

My Sister goes to Seattle regularly on the ferry from Victoria.  They always use Hotwire to book a hotel and have been very happy both with the price and the location.

 Cheers,  Heather and Georgette

As of last night, 3/24 no more Amtrak seats available back to Seattle on Sunday, 9/23. . . you'll have to go the next day!

We booked the 516 from PDX to BC. . .  to get there. . . coming back is another story.

I'm hoping they'll add another car or something!

Otherwise we'll be leaving on 9/24 at 6am!!  ewe!

HI everyone, I am also going to take Amtrak to Vancouver on Sat, I haven't got my ticket yet, so maybe I can meet other people going up there.  I am going solo, so it would be wonderful to meet other cruisers (lol).  Has anyone decided on a hotel, does anyone want to share a room before we board the ship the next day?  I am so excited, its less then 6 months away..  Trish

Here is some more info on train and hotels in Seattle - the topic came up a few months ago.

General Flight info and Amtrak to Vancouver

11/18/2011, 5:20 PM

This will be a little long but:  The train is the best!!!   And this may help more than you!!  This is based on my own experience and info from some very kind Seattle ladies

Amtrak business class car has less seats than the coaches. It is 2 and 1 seating vs 2 and 2.  So it is more controlled in terms of seating when you get on the train, although you still don't get assigned a specific seat the last I knew.   You may be offered pre-boarding but since there are fewer seats, the mad rush to get a seat should be less of an issue. You do get a free newspaper and unlimited juice and soft drinks.   Tip:  sit towards the middle of the car to have a smoother ride  (wheels are at the ends).   The other thing is to look for a wide window on the left side if you want to see the Puguet Soumd - great view!!!

I took the train at 7:40 am (4 hour ride)  to Vancouver when I took the Alaska trip in 2009 and the coach seat was fine.  I actually ended up in the cafe car for most of the trip  talking to someone who had graduated from my school (Central Michigan University) although she was a lot younger, and straight, the time flew by!!!!!

Re airfare.  What I did was fly to Seattle on Saturday and take the train to Vancouver (Jet Blue had a great flight sale.) on Sunday.  Then Sunday after the cruise, I was booked on a Delta flight from Vancouver in the early afternoon to get back East.  Since you are in Florida, you may want to wait a few month to book the air.   After the cruise if you take train from Seattle and so want to fly back from Seattle to Florida, you will need to stay in Seattle overnite since the train does not leave Vancouver until 5:45 pm.  or you could take the bus.

Re hotels and getting to downtown from airport.

Days Inn, Best Western, Sixth Ave Inn, 8th Ave Inn, are all decent, safe, and less expensive. Your cab should be cheap to Train station  they are about 12 block away.  Anything in zip codes 98121 or 98101 are very close to the King Street Station where the Amtrak train to Vancouver leaves from.

I flew into Seattle the night before the Cruise and stayed at 8th Ave Inn.  It's just across the street from the Westin, so you'll have a short half-block walk if you take the Airporter bus from airport to downtown

Depending on how much luggage you bring, there's a bus-to-light rail connection from the airport to downtown which runs about $2.50, by the way. If you've got one roller bag and a backpack, I hear that the bus drivers will be nice and give you time to get yourself and your stuff on board, and the light rail goes to within not many blocks walk of several of these cheaper downtown hotels.

There's a nice food court at Westlake Center, which is just a block away from the 8th Ave Inn ,so you can get something decent and not expensive to eat for dinner. Or if you want to splurge, I ate at the Dahlia Lounge on 4th Ave, which is only a few blocks away from 8th Ave Inn (trendy but wonderful!!!)  Or to really splurge, Flying Fish on First Ave, lesbian-owned, very fancy and was recommended to be very tasty.

Marcia & Jana

We still have not booked flights yet. Can't decide if we'll fly in on the Friday or Saturday. Sounds like we should book the train into Vancouver, but how soon? Marcia, are you taking the train in on Saturday like Jana or are you staying one night in Vancouver?

Thanks ladies for all your help

Tami & Soraya  Smile

Jujuomatic, after the cruise and a rest day in Vancover we are going back down the coast on the Amtrak Cascades train to Portland. Trip takes appox 8hrs 15mins and it was $58 when we booked it. Have booked quite a lot of train travel , we went from Florida to NY after  our last Olivia cruise, and this time all our travel in the States is by train, we loved it so much.

For any one thinking of doing long distance train trips , the sooner  you book the better ,prices do go up considerably especially if you book a sleeper like we have from San Fran  to Seattle and from  Portland to LA .Price is not that much different to flying but all your meals are included, you get to see the countryside, and you don't have the hassel of busy airports!

Hi sleddog we took your advice from a posting wayback in Dec and made sure we booked the train not the connecting shuttle bus from Seattle to Vancover. We are catching the train from San Fran and have to stay over night in Seattle to get the train instead of the connecting bus, its a little more expensive to do it this way   but  besides been a more pleasant trip we thought it would give us the opportunity to have a look around  Seattle.

We still have to book  one nights accom in Seattle so if any one has any surgestions they would be appreciated. Would like something close to train station, not expensive, we are staying at the YWCA in Vancover,  would rather save our money to spend on excusions than on accom !   Thanks Jayne
