Alaska,   I would bet that you know alot of good stream fishing also.   SO I have to ask:  Do you ever see Grizzly Bears?   Curious Deb

That's my only problem up here is I don't have my own boat. I keep saying maybe some day, but with the cost of a ocean going boat up here it isn't going to happen.

Jan,

We're right down the beach, and also have mobility issues.  We not only know of some good fishing piers in the area that are chair/scooter accessible, but we have our own boat too that we can fish from.  We'll have to hook up during and/or after this cruise.

WOW!!!  Would I -ever- just LOVE to go fishing in Alaska!  But alas, I am disabled and pretty mobility challenged these days so I probably couldn't handle the physical challenge anymore ... ;-(

Think about coming on up. Bring your partner if you have one. I am retired, live alone and having people up gives me something to do, lets me make friends, and lets me show off my wonderful state.

If you ladies like to fish that much you need to come up and see me in the summer. You can go out and try for a 100 or 200 lb Halibut or that 70lb king Salmon. I have a guest bed room and a small very old fishing RV. That I take to all the good fishing places.

Hi Jan,  It's always nice to meet fellow fisherwomen.  Lynn and I have a pontoon boat and are totally addicted to finding the fish ( in the summer).  I am starting to take up fly fishing ( in Virginia/West Virginia)  I find it to be kind of an art, and a sweeter gentler way with fish.  But just like golf ( we like that too) it is expensive expecially when you start talking about charter boating in the Carribean.  So alas, I am amibivalent but open to ideas.  Deb

Did some updated research:The Fin and Flippers has been renamed to Maya Key and added some features:

This island is an exotic animal rescue and rehabilitation facility, and a tour of the animals, and wildlife education is included in the price. There are also replicas of Mayan Ruins, and a Mayan Culture museum.

This pristine island features two secluded beaches, excellent snorkeling from a scenic pier, a 70,000 gallon swimming pool, 5,000 square foot lounge deck, lush garden paths bursting with indigenous flora and most recently an animal rescue center, artisan plaza and Roatan’s finest cultural attraction, The Bay Island’s Interpretation Center and Ethnic Honduran Art Exhibit Center.

Things To Do

  • Swim in warm Caribbean waters or swimming pool.
  • Snorkel pristine coral reefs.
  • Lounge on the beach or poolside.
  • Shop in a fully stocked and reasonably priced gift shop.
  • Drink cool tropical cocktails.
  • Eat tasty local treats.
  • Learn of Mayan history at the Interpretation Center.
  • See the finest in ethnic Honduran art in the Exhibit Center.
  • Witness local artisans at work in the Artisan Plaza.
  • See exotic animals such as: Jaguar, Ocelots, Monkeys, Toucans, Macaws and Parrots.
  • Coming soon…Sting Ray, Nurse Shark and Sea Lion Interactions.

What's New?

The Bay Islands’ Interpretation Center, Copan Mayan Ball Court and Hieroglyphic Staircase reproduction, Artisan Plaza and Exotic Animal Rescue/Rehabilitation Center.

Tabayana Beach is beautiful but not good snorkling:

Hey Mesha,

I looked at the flying chairs to the beach, but read that that Mahogany Bay was a man-made beach and was kinda turned off by that. It is probably similar to the one we stopped at in Grand Turk on the Westerdam last year.  There were plenty of beach lounge chairs.  I reviewed the three possible beach excursions HAL can offer us in Roatan. We won't know which one/s will be offered to us on Olivia until we get our packets from Olivia with access to the HAL website for our trip.   I am hoping they offer the Exclusive Beach Break as I read good reviews about this excursion on the web!

Exclusive Beach Break
Duration: Approximately 4½ Hours
Description from HAL website: After a short walk from the pier, you will reach a private dock and will be transferred to the beautiful Osgood Cay --home of Fins’n Flippers, an adventurous private island just 3 minutes offshore by motor launch. This beautiful key offers 2 secluded beaches, excellent snorkeling from a scenic pier, a 70.000-gal swimming pool & lounge deck, and lush garden paths bursting with indigenous flora. After your arrival, you will be taken to the swimming pool area where you will be greeted with a cocktail. You will have free time to spend at the beach and swim in the beautiful crystal clear water bay teeming with colorful fish. Snorkeling is also available. Restrooms, long chairs and showers are available on site.

I read on trip advisor that Fins’n Flippers was awesome. We would have access to another pool by a beautiful ocean.

The other two excursions possible through HAL:
Tabayana Beach Day and Fantasy Island

I am not sure if HAL will offer us the Exclusive Beach Break with Fins’n Flippers or if other ships will be in on the excursion if they do offer it to us through HAL. I hope not.  It looks like they have a website and that it may be possible to contact them to find out. I was planning on waiting to see if it is listed on the HAL excursion list which I am hoping we will have access to later this week or early next week.

 See ya at the beach

Sounds like we should just go fishing at home as we are just down the way a bit in Palm Harbor ... ;-)  And save the cruise for the things we can't do at home like you suggested earlier!

The beach chairs sit 4 people each, but they won't throw just anyone on them with you.  They aren't reserved per se.  You pay about $5 to have unlimited shuttles back and forth on the "skyride" from the port to Mahogany Bay beach.  They run constantly, so getting on one is no big deal.  As long as it is up and running, you'll be able to hop on for the ride!

We'll be joining you in the afternoon!

Anyone interested in riding the "flying beach chairs" and then maybe hanging out on the beach where there will be plenty of cool beverages? Paula and I want to spend our time in Mahogany Bay doing something like this but we don't want to be over run with lots of children. I like the idea of going somewhere that I have a chair reserved with my name on it. Something similar to our beach escapes in Cozumel and Costa Maya. I have read descriptions of some excursions but none of the ones I have read give a number of participants and they seem to be at resorts which I know will be crowded. Just putting this out there so if anyone finds something like this and a group is formed we want to be included. Will HAL offer a beach escape? Guess we will have to wait until we get our booking numbers to see.

Mesha
