  • Hi, it’s Jill.

As I continued our tour in New Delhi, I was still curious about the culture and mix of sounds, smells, modes of transportation and history. It's one of those things you never get used to, but are constantly in amazement about.

My guide took us to Humayun's Tomb; a magnificent monument built in red sandstone. As I entered the complex, I thought "Wow, this looks like a miniature Taj Mahal". Later I found out that Haji Begum, Humayun's first wife and mother of Emperor Akbar actually designed and supervised the entire construction. Her design was ahead of the times and indeed was the basis for the Taj Mahal, built almost a hundred years later!  Each monument is unique, as Humayun's tomb was built for a husband by her wife, and Taj Mahal was built for a wife by a grieving husband.

We had a delicious gourmet lunch at a local restaurant, sampling one of our first authentic Indian dishes (delicious). Our next adventure was to Qutab Manor, India's tallest stone tower. At a height of 234 feet, the "Tower of Victory" is considered to be the world's most perfect specimen of architecture. A mathematical marvel, this structure has remained standing for eight centuries.

We also traveled by bus past the War Memorial Arch, Presidential House and Lutyen's Delhi.

At the end of the day we had a delicious dinner at the Oberoi hotel, and got to bed early in anticipation of our next day's flight.

Our next "Voice" will take you to Khajuraho, well known for its temple architecture and sculptures, it is also known as the "Temple of Love" with it's erotic carvings.
