  • Kind of a Lesbian Film Festival

  • I have seen most of the lesbian movies that are available at Blockbuster; the ones I like to call Gentle Rentals. You know…the films with beautiful straight actresses that appeal to the general public and Middle America, with slightly risqué context but very little physical contact.

Recently, I rented a few of them for an inadvertent Kind-of-Lesbian Film Festival: IMAGINE ME & YOU, followed by GRAY MATTERS.

Both movies were…cute. They weren’t offensive, but neither was entirely realistic either. Piper Perabo certainly seems comfortable playing gay (see: the awful LOST AND DELIRIOUS), but I was much more interested in and drawn to Lena Headey in IMAGINE ME & YOU. And I’m sorry, but there’s no way I can suspend my disbelief enough to believe that Heather Graham is a lesbian. Not for two hours, not ever.

Although GRAY MATTERS was well produced and written/directed by a woman, I might have enjoyed it more with a different cast. I will stand by 2001’s KISSING JESSICA STEIN as the best of the bunch, from cast to execution of story and resolution. Although some of my friends were less than thrilled with the outcome of this movie, I found it very entertaining and genuine in sentiment.  I love Jessica Westfeldt’s character and spirit; she could easily be Lisa Kudrow’s doppelganger.

What do YOU think of these films?

Up 'til I watched "Imagine Me & You" my two favorite movies were "Better than Chocolate" and "Kissing Jessica Stein."  I got to watch Imagine Me & You during a screening.  We have a large senior population here that go to anything that is free.  They went to the screening having no idea what the movie is about (like my neighbors to my right).  I would say that only about 10 people walked out early.  I have an affinity to British humor, accents blah blah blah so I was quite taken with the story... the acting was "eh."  It reminded me of the same kind of movie as "Love Letter" with Ellen (both being romatic comedies).  One of my favorite movies hands down is "Fire" (the double-storyline was sweet and loved the high tension ending)... with close contenders for "Better than Chocolate" and "Claire of the Moon".  Quite a few of my older friends prefer "Desert Hearts" but we can agree to disagree.  Of there are always campy movies such as DEBS and But I'm a Cheerleader to just keep you saying... what!  Then of course there's movies that just contain gay characters that the main conflict of the movie or theme is not about being gay (ex. Saving Face- it is more about culture/mother-child relationships..., My mother likes women, Karmen Gei, and 101 Rejaivik).  Loving Annabelle felt a little like a recreation of Lost & Delirious in a way.

Have you seen The Gymnast?
