I have been sitting here in front of my TV and computer since yesterday.
Prop. 8 is projected to win, with over 95% of the votes being counted. The latest word is that there are still around 3 million absentee and provisional ballots to count. The Yes on Prop 8 side has started to celebrate, and Gloria Allred is supposed to make an announcement announcing a lawsuit along with Robin Tyler and Diane Olson, the first lesbian couple to marry in Los Angeles. (They were the couple who brought the initial lawsuit to the Supreme Court in California.)There are over 18,000 same-sex couples who were married in California since June, and I am sure that many of them (like me) are feeling down right now.
Yet a part of me is jazzed because we are putting up one hell of a fight!
Yes on 8 was not a landslide victory, clearly the people have spoken and what they are saying is there are enough LGBT supporters in this society to give bigots a run for their money!! The final announcement on Prop. 8 is supposed to be given tommorrow after we hear from the Secretary of State. For now, celebs are speaking out like the women on The View. Samuel L. Jackson is rumored to be making an announcement sometime today too. Florida and Arizona have lost same-sex marriage rights and you can bet that civil rights and equality fighters have another fight in front of them because of that. We know that here in California we are leading the fight, and the rest of the world is watching.
Whether we win or lose this battle, we WILL win the war!
The fight is FAR from over.
