  • A Risk Worth Taking

  • So how did the idea of travel come up and why travel with Olivia?

After spending 15 years in the record business creating music for women I had no idea what to do next. But as we set out to do a series of 15th Anniversary concerts with most of the Olivia recording artists it became crystal clear to me after a concert in Seattle what was next. At a brunch the day after the concert a woman said, "Wouldn't it be great to have a concert on the water?"

I began to think...Concert on the water, cruise...vacations for women...I can do that! And within a few weeks I had rented a ship (didn't know it was called chartering) and Olivia Travel was born.

What happened to me is exactly what happens to entrepreneurs when the right idea strikes...there was no question in my mind that vacations for women would work. I was growing up with my market and when I vacationed with Rachel, we never felt comfortable being "out" on vacation. We were out everywhere in our lives except on vacation. Who wants to be the focus of negative attention or curiosity. Just holding hands on the beach was a risk. So I knew if we had that experience, creating vacations for women that were all-inclusive ship charters or resorts would be something most lesbians would want. Kind of a no-brainer...one worthy of risking everything we had.

I chartered a ship for February of 1990. A 4-night trip to the Bahamas on the Dolphin IV. I put the deposit down and sent a letter to our mailing list. I needed 600 women to sign up and pay right away or lose the deposit and pretty much all the money we had. Within 3 months 600 women signed up. So I added a second trip and that too sold out. Olivia's inaugural cruises sailed with 1200 unbelievably thrilled passengers.

Now, almost 17 years and 100 trips later (Mexican Riviera makes 100!) I look back at that decision to put the money down before we knew anyone would join us...It was absolutely clear to me that it would work and I didn't question the risk for a moment.

From the very first cruise, we did what we knew how to do best...a 4- night music and comedy production. The same thread that made Olivia Records so successful was brought onboard our trips -- the best entertainers and music our community had to offer were hired and today we remain driven to bring the very best women entertainers in the world...k.d. lang, Melissa Etheridge, Lily Tomlin, Heart, Indigo Girls, Marga Gomez, Margaret Cho, Suede, Karen WIlliams, Vicki Shaw, Rene Hicks....and on and on. We also bring 30-40 of our own staff to assure the trip of a lifetime.

The magic ingredient remains the same. A vacation to great places creating a space where women can be free to be ourselves every minute of everyday, redesigning the activities and the entertainment to completely gear the experience to women. And what happens on the ships and resorts is something almost inexplicable...there is a sense of everyone being part of the same experience --an atmosphere where everyone feels totally comfortable and has a great time. You can't go on these trips, whether you are 25 or 75, even if you are out all the time or in the closet your entire life, and not have an amazing experience. I've been on about 80 of the 100 trips and it happens to me every time. We make you laugh, we pamper you and we create a sense of freedom while you play and dance and kiss and meet new friends. Not a bad formula for vacations.

And the entertainment has been such an important part of the experience as well. The comedians and musicians set the tone for the week from their own shows to the Newlywed Old Wed game...to Olivia Idol...even Bingo is unlike any Bingo you've ever seen.

One of my favorite things to witness has been the metamorphosis of the crew...they love us! We are the best guests...more fun, so appreciative of the service, so happy it becomes truly infectious. Just imagine 1800 lesbians being served by 400 men!

Lifelong friendships are made, sometimes a whole new group of vacation buddies are created that see each other only when they travel with Olivia. Okay...it's a cult.

I wish I could truly explain the experience...imagine a place where no one is other...imagine the feeling of being free...completely free for a week. I know...many of you feel that way now...and I know many of you are still in the closet somewhere -- at work, to family, or all the time. Whatever...this vacation takes you one more step out. Something will shift, just by enjoying your vacation. I guarantee you will go home a little lighter, a little stronger, and a little happier. But I warn you...these vacations kind of ruin other types of vacations...so be prepared to come with us over and over again.

We've come a long way since that first trip. We are now the top charterer for Holland America and have an extraordinary reputation in an industry that was initially afraid of our business quite frankly. We now travel all over the world, from Antarctica to an Africa, from Australia to Europe. We now use 4-6 star ships, riverboats, beautiful Caribbean and Mexican resorts, Eco cruises to the Galapagos, and 1800 passenger ships to beautiful tropical islands.

So if you've never been on an Olivia trip...just take that first giant leap of faith and join us. You will never regret it...I promise.

And I know, I know...it seems a little pricey sometimes...but if you're wondering if it's worth it...just ask anyone whose gone on an Olivia trip or call me or any of our folks at Olivia with any questions...we're here for you. Actually that's our only reason for existing as a company.

So...I hope I've described the experience without being too enthusiastic. I just think every lesbian should travel with us..

    Judy

Hi Judy,

I will be going on my second Olivia cruise on Nov. 23 08. How about having Jackie Warner back??

Judy:

We just left you in Ft Lauderdale from the Cruise for a Cause.  How wonderful and powerful a week it was.  Thank you for yet again (6th WOW traveler!) making it a trip to remember.   One of the touches that make it so unforgettable is your greeting each one of us as we arrive as if we are your cherished friends...you truly have created an Olivia Nation of women that celebrate the uniqueness of each and everyone of us.  As we left, you were there hugging each of us and that really touched my heart, it was the final gift of a week of gifts!

As someone who has used the music and concerts of Olivia as a touchstone for coming out and for learning about this community of incredible women, powerful feminists and loving lesbians, I would ask if the future website could include an Itunes like interface so we can purchase these songs that have changed our lives.  A download site so we can save these gems that have touched us and are so hard to find.  I have played out my tapes beyond repair.  Because of the gift of these songs, I have discovered that I truly am a "Changer and the Changed".  We need these songs.  Just a thought!

You are truly a gift, a visionary.  I would also like to say thank you for your partner who shares you with this, our community.  Her sacrifice is our gift!

Dear Judy and Friends,

I was distressed to hear that you and your company is being sued.  I trust that 'good things happen to good people' and that Olivia Travel will prevail.  I feel obligated to let you know how much your company has meant to me and my partner of 34 years.  We have travelled with you many times; and every trip has been absolutely spectacular.  It has been very enjoyable to travel with like-minded women and to be totally free to share our love with all of you.  We look forward to seeing you later this year and wish you all the best.  Please know that you and Olivia Travel are in our prayers for a successful outcome.  (Yes, I do believe that God hears our prayers.)

With love,

Joanne and Mary Lou

Followup: I just read the Advocate story about the lawsuit and do have a better understanding now. Outrageous. Judy, I think you should offer those suing you this "Web 2.0" (and unusuable) web site (stripped of loyal Olivia customers' info, of course) and consider the law suit settled. They did take your wonderful company in "unhealthy" directions, as you noted in your letter. As I said in my testimonial, my partner and I, and friends, enjoyed 3 wonderful cruises with Olivia and will (I hope) enjoy many more in the years ahead.

I was saddened, too, to read about the lawsuit. I still don't really understand why they are suing but I've added my testimonial about wonderful experiences with Olivia, and wish you all the best!

Dear Judy,

I must tell you I am saddened and disappointed Re. the Lawsuit.

I have been a loyal traveler with Olivia since 1998, many Cruises and Club Med types.  These trips have been wonderful and new lifetime friendships established.

What direction do you see Olivia heading?  Several of us who have read the Court Case allegations are very concerned.

I think your "Women of Olivia" want to be informed and kept abreast of "Our" Company.

Thank you and I wish you ALL the best to get these issues resolved and be able to continue with the Olivia Quality that has been built.

When my partner & I arrived at the airport in Puerto Vallarta, November 10th 2007 we were so incredibly excited. We sat on the bus that was taking us to our hotel, everyone was sharing Olivia experiences. We told everyone that this was our first Olivia trip. They all seemed to smile knowingly. One women said that she would pretty much guarantee that we would book another before we left. We did, 2nd week in the Turks 2008!

We had the best time. This is the only way to travel, the freedom is so incredibly empowering! My partner & I are completely "out" at home but having the opportunity to meet so many others in this wonderful community was eye opening for both of us.

Judy, you should be enthusiastic & incredibly proud of what you do!

Thank you!

I too, think every lesbian should travel with Olivia -- the first trip will make you a believer!  I've been on 3 cruises in the last 14 months, and each one was unique and amazing and worth every penny spent.  There truly is no substitute for the Olivia experience. The excitement and memories stay with you over time and make you realize that "Feel Free" is more than just a slogan...it's a collective state of mind.

Judy and Friends,

I have just returned from Puerto Vallarta (PVR), my very first Olivia trip. I am old enough to remember when Olivia was just a "music company" ... seems like only yesterday. In those days, I was a young, uneducated, untraveled young lesbian trying to figure out who I was and how to make my way in the world. Since that time, I have have loved, learned, traveled, been married, been divorced, earned a doctorate in business, become a company executive -- all the things we can be fortunate enough to grow through as we grow up and become the women we choose to become.

Let me say this emphatically ... My recent Olivia trip was the grandest travel experience of my life! There were 700+ lesbians in PVR of all shapes, sizes, ages, colors and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Olivia staff was absolutely incredible. I cannot even imagine the "managerial magic" (yes, managers will laugh at this statement) that is required to develop the level of commitment among their team members that I observed every single day. The resort was excellent and the staff was well-trained to know the traveler and understand our lifestyle. The entertainment, the activities ... everything was just excellent. I will tell you, too, that Judy D. was there every day talking to us, hanging out with us, and being there as a part of our continuing community of Olivia travelers.

This was the best travel money I have spent. Yes, Olivia trips are more pricey than booking a private trip. I challenge you to find a private trip that offers more freedom, more love, and better-looiking dancing partners than an Olivia trip. It is worth every penny and I look forward to my next Olivia trip.

I just returned from my first Olivia trip and I am still feeling overwhelmed with love, peace and community. We spent the week at the Vallarta Palace and everything was over the top, we were pampered every moment of every day, the entertainment was great, the Olivia staff outstanding and every little thing was just perfect. It was a life changing week for me in many ways and one that we will never forget (what a way to celebrate your honeymoon). We've already booked our next trip and can't wait for that to arrive. Thank you Judy for all that you have done and all that you continue to do, you are truly an inspiriation.

The word that comes to mind is Bravo! well done. Great minds think great things. You are so true in every word you have said. I am still very much in the closet and for this reason have not been able to form or enjoy my type of relationships. I am looking forward to my first olivia trip and am hoping that things will be easier for me not only to me friends like myself but to build relationships freely. Thank you and continue the good work.

Dear Judy,

Enthusiasm begets enthusiasm - keep it coming!  I agree that every lesbian should travel with Olivia;  the experience almost defies adequate description.  New adjectives are needed!  It truly is THAT wonderful!  And, yes, we've been on an Olivia trip every year since we finally booked our first one!

Telling the Olivia history is important and I'm so glad you are repeating it here and adding your personal notes and opinions, for YOU are one of the many people I so look forward to seeing again each year when we travel with Olivia.  Thank you for what you do and for who you are and for what you have done and continue to do personally, and through Olivia, for us and for our community.

An admitted fan,

Barbara (aka "Brewmax")

Well, why wouldn't  you be enthusiastic? Yes, every lesbian should have the Olivia experience.

We have enjoyed every Olivia cruise we have taken.

We look forward to many more.

Judy, can't wait to shake your hand, or hug again on January 26th.

 Sincerely

Phyl & Julie
