Absolutely right on, Kate, about not having time for the Palin Puzzle. And still I can't resist trying to get the answer. WHY would McCain make such a horrendous error of judgment? Of course it's an insult to women and a revelation of bedrock cynicism. Of course it's an insult to the office of the Vice President, beleaguered enough over the years, the butt of more jokes than air travel and Oval Office pizza delivery combined. And yes, perhaps part of it is, as some suggest, that at least with Palin, McCain, the 60 watt bulb, wouldn't be out-shone by Alaska's Endless Night.
Yet something more keeps nagging: the thought that there is self-sabotage beneath all this. Seeing the graffiti on the wall, McCain picks a running mate that will clearly lose him votes, at which time he can then blame. . . .
